Plain Jane cue construction

Planning to have this cue made with Cocobolo and Quilted Sapele.

I initially started with the design having joints, butt cap and rings, somehow, it seems to remove something from the cue, and I ended up with this.

I once read that you should never join two pieces of wood together without any rings in between, is there any truth to this or is there a workaround to achieve the same effect without compromising structural integrity?

EDIT: pin would be Uniloc
 
I'm not a big fan of wood buttcaps or joint collars and in this case it's not even a separate piece that can be changed when it cracks. I would not recommend you go forward with this design. You can certainly join two woods together, that's not the problem.
 
Your design is possible, but it would involve some reinforcement under the skin sort of speak. You could use a Phenolic sleave at each end of the cue and you install it by creating a face groove and leave a thin veneer of material on the out side. You have to engineer the sleave so as it is still reinforcing the ends. Those areas will still be vulnerable to chipping though, using stabilized or resin reinforced material does help.

I have a cue that looks similar...made by John Chaplin...Coos Cues.

Cocobolo with Sindora Burl handle...cored with Purple Heart.

I would hesitate to have a cue built without a joint collar or butt cap.
