Diamond doesn't have a 'standard' size. You can get League(4.75), Pro(4.5), 4.25, 4.00, etc. HUGE difference in shimming the pockets versus properly extending rails like Diamond does on their tighter pockets. The place i play has nice GC4's they fkn ruined by shimming to about 4-1/8. If properly done (subrail ext-proper angles) they would play light years better. A triple-shimmed GC plays harder than a Diamond with 4" pockets because shimming totally fks up the pocket angles. Because the throats are so tight any ball hit with any speed gets spit out. A 4" Diamond doesn't play that way. It's interesting to look back to the time when GCs were the standard in most of the country before Diamond took that spot. I remember hearing about double and triple shimmed GC tables in other pool rooms and thinking about how tight those must play. The reality is a triple shimmed GC is essentially a factory Diamond table today in terms of pocket size - although they may have played a bit tougher due to the facing angles.
Not taking anything away from the pros who played in tournaments on new cloth with 5" pockets, but that's a bucket compared to the pro tournaments being played on 4" Diamonds today.
agree 100000000000%. no comparison.Extending the subrails gives shimming the 4 out.
That table is built to withstand commercial use.Good points. I appreciate that. My wife and kids think this is the household pool table. While the table will be in my formal dining room I would rather not have them play on it, as pathetic as that might sound. So the less shots they make the less fun they have and the less likely they are to play on the table.
I was only halfway serious. If I don’t let them play on it I’m sure my wife would just turn the table into a laundry table anywayThat table is built to withstand commercial use.
Let those beautiful people play...they prob wont do it often and if they do, yay.
One thing to be aware of when powder coating old cast parts: outgassing. There's gas trapped in the casing which gets released through heating it up during the powder coating process. Some of my pieces had to be done multiple times. My coater didn't charge me extra but yours might. Just an FYI.It took me 45 minutes to polish one of the corners and it looks like trash. Im just sending them to get powder coated.

All Gold Crown I tables came with plastic skirts.Did all GC1’s come with skirts or did they make both options with and without them?
Cool. What was done? These are done.
I decided not to powder coat. I painted and cleared them. That might get frowned upon but im ok with it.Cool. What was done?
Cool. Your table, your decisions.I decided not to powder coat. I painted and cleared them. That might get frowned upon but im ok with it.
Now put them in your grill and bake for an hour at 250-300 degrees, it will cure the paint and make it extra tough.I decided not to powder coat. I painted and cleared them. That might get frowned upon but im ok with it.
