Is it time to play one pocket??

no one any good is going to play without betting, so plan on betting.

its a slow gambling game and players that dont gamble and play under some pressure never get good. and its stupid to play for nothing as why not take risky shots.

It's the only game I enjoy. Learn from playing, reading, watching.... an instructor or high level player.
You will constantly learn something each time you play. Start out today by breaking gently.... take ball in hand and run as many balls as you can into your pocket. As you begin to understand the game it gets interesting. The fun never ends. Log onto https://www.onepocket.org/ introduce yourself....

A game can be found in a small circle of friends. I do not play for cash and never will.... and I can afford to lose but have no interest in money games. Please do not discourage the OP. Myself I eventually played with my instructor and players better than myself. The OP can decide if he wants a cash or recreational game as he progresses..

Love the game. A great safe is better than pocketing a ball most of the time. I am lucky that it’s the main old guy game at my room and play quite a bit. I have a ton to learn but one of my mentors told me this and I always keep it in mind.

There are 3 options, make a ball, safe a ball, move a ball.

nothing wrong with not gambling but the game of one pocket is never going to be fun or productive without something being wagered.

and no way is someone going to get decent at it.

he is wrong. you pocket the ball and then play the safe if need be. each ball to you is 12.5 percent of the game.

in that order yes.

glad you are having fun at the game. keep at it.

practice slow rolling banks and cross over ones.

Not looking to argue/dispute but I'm never going to be a force. Will never be any better than an upper end C player. If I played /practiced more I'd definitely be stronger. After a while I had a few 8out's. Rather pay an instructor to learn and scrimmage with.
I'd say a lot of people agree with you..but it's not the answer unless they love the action. OnePocket.Org offers tournaments. Our local room offers them.... there is a fee to enter but a good way to get involved, get started.

paying a fee to win an award or money is gambling. simple as that.
you are betting everyone else you will win and they are betting you you wont and they will.

not much of it, but it does put mental pressure on you and you may get to play some players that know something.

and you do gamble decent money, but not on your skill every single day.

you insure your car by betting it will get in an accident that is your fault. the insurance company bets you it doesn't.

if you own a house, you bet the insurance company it will burn down or be damaged in some way. and they bet you it wont.

if you have life insurance, you bet the insurance company you will die young. and they bet you will live longer. that's a bet you make hoping to lose your money.

this applies to all that say they dont gamble or think so

uh, did you say you dont gamble?:)

You have it broken down....but you missed an item.... Marriage.

Confirmed. Everyday is a gamble.
Everyday is a great day. If health is not an issue...gotta love what comes out of a day in the life. At my age I'm happy taking a good sh.. but do not gamble how great it will or will be.

Anyway back to 1P. I asked a few club house players if they wanted to play 1P. Nobody knew what they were doing..we just kept firing up table and playing safe. No offense, no turning defense into offense, I asked around for an instructor.. I wanted to learn .... bbb suggested Tom Wirth. First time I met with Tom I told him my talent is limited. I'd like to get the most I can out of it. Said I have no idea where to start. Have no unrealistic expectations. He replies he is going to teach me to think my way through. We started with Take-Outs, banking zones, drills. After a while we start to discuss table play... strategic moves. Turning defense to offense, traps, cue ball movement, how to turn the table over. Beginning, middle, end of game. It has been the best pool experience since I began playing (around 1961). To repeat I do not put enough time in to be Solid but playing ok enough to have fun. To play a stronger level player is a beautiful thing... I'm not suppose to win but get to see where my flaws are and how others play. There's Tidley Winks, Checkers and Chess in pool. 1p is game in a game. The fun of it is learning. The fun is we never stop learning. It screws up our sleep...keep thinking about what happened today. Not a bad thing.

I couldn’t agree more and the gamble in marriage for me is, not saying the wrong thing at the right time lol.

But yes back to 1P and the analogy, it’s the decision making that I find the most fun/interesting/hard. Getting punished for a poor decision has been a great yet painful teacher.

I learned to eat with a vacuum cleaner next to me. Years ago I began to do what my father did.... Bite my finger and read the paper. He knew.

The good feeling of finding a shot... dead shot or carom... or the awe shit for losing the cue.
