WNT Grand Prix of Pool in 2027

Like I said in the thread for this announcement, this could be a huge boost for pool's exposure considering who they are co-sharing a roof with. Could you imagine if someone in the casino industry picks up on wanting pro pool as a weekend event at their casino?

Also, I think this single elimination format may be the future going forward for non-majors. It's quick, it's efficient and everyone seems to love it.

This is being held at the WorldGaming event ICE Barcelona, the biggest gaming expo there is. Everyone from casino owners to gaming technology experts attend this show and having pool there can only benefit it --> https://www.icegaming.com/

Like I said, a single elimination event is perfect for the clientele going there to do scouting on what to add to their portfolio of live events at their venues or any other ventures. Maybe this can be somewhat of a return for pool to casino floors if the people there see it as an attraction to their customers.

Yes, online casino sponsorship is a very different subject from having casino hotels as event sponsors.

A casino hotel doesn't care much what events they host, only with how much revenue those events generate, chiefly from room nights purchased by the attendees. Hence, how a casino hotel feels about pool does not terribly matter. If a pool tournament and a baking competition both want the same dates at the same casino hotel, it won't come down to whether the hotel likes pool. It's all about revenue and these hotels tend to require a guarantee of a certain number of room nights purchased, and shortages must be covered by the event producer.

Alternatively, online casino sponsorship might possibly come without an obligation to have the event at a casino hotel and, if so, that would be phenomenal, because pool event producers would be in a better position to manage their production budget.

In terms of a physical casino, I would guess that the willingness of the participants (players and fans) to actually go gamble while they are there is also a factor. This is one area where I’d think the pool community is high on the list.

Online gambling has been a major sponsor of professional snooker for years. I’m sure WNT would love to have them for pool, but the issue is probably how many viewers will go place bets on the matches. Does anyone know if Americans can actually bet through the international betting sites?

Honestly, I don't think event attendees gamble much in the casino at pool tourneys. Over the years, I've spent more than a little time in the casino at Derby City and this is my observation. Now the bar, that's a different story, for they spend and spend and spend some more at the bar.

The Derby City rules aren't quite the same as the WNT rules. I was surprised it was a WNT event a few years ago. I am not surprised it no longer is.

Just a weird, if interesting, event, Derby City.

Spoken like a true new fan 🤣

I believe you said you started watching pro pool around the same time as WNT's inception, so I can understand why you may feel the DCC is weird.

My last year at the Derby was the first year they moved the casino to just outside of the tournament area. It certainly seemed to me that the action in the action room was down because the players had lost their money in the casino. Maybe it rebounded in later years.

I've been to fifteen (best guess) Derby City Classics at the Caesar's Horseshoe. I really don't think that, as a group, pool tournament attendees have ever given the casino too much action. In the additional action room on the casino level which was added in January 2025 and was there once again in 2026, the action was pretty hot and heavy, often lasting 24/7 with some high betting and side betting, but as you indicate, not so much in the upstairs action rooms.
