As only a few of you were aware, my youngest Sons Mother passed away last Sunday evening from Cancer. She would have been 49 years young this December. We had just celebrated his wedding in August of this year. She was dancing a Mother/Son dance with our boy just 2 months ago, and now we've had to navigate the tragedy of saying goodbye.

I'm not posting this looking for sympathy, and I hesitated before posting this at all. IF there is even the chance that sharing this prompts someone who has questions/doubts to get a cancer screening, it will have been worth the trouble. Please do NOT wait even one second. There are many types of this disease, where time/early detection is of the essence!

Please consult your Physician/Dermatologist, get blood work, etc, if you are even slightly on the fence/concerned. I will post this in both the main forum and NPR.
Thank you sincerely.
j2 and family.

my older son will be 49 in about 3 weeks. he is getting to the age of testing, prostate, first colonoscopy, etc. My mother died from breast cancer at age 64, but we were poor, no insurance, so she and doctor decided to wait and see that this lump does.....fatal choice. Early testing is always the best option, and get 2 or 3 opinions. Ihad skin cancer in the nail bed of my index finger, 3 operations later I am "cured" after some whittling. had a Moh's procedure by the best skin doctor at Emory in Atlanta. 22 years no recurrence,, knock on wood, or maybe carbon fiber.

I'll 2nd the idea for cancer screening , I lost both of my parent to cancer , my grandmother was a double mastectomy survivor from back in the 1960's yes she was tougher than the back wall of a shooting gallery !
I also am a cancer survivor and remain cancer free since 12 - 26 - 2017 , yes I celebrate Christmas a bit longer than most because of it !

As Joe mentioned early detection is paramount to kicking cancer to the curb the early the better .
That and its a great way to meet cute nurses and Dr's , granted 98 % of them are married but still you got to meet them !

My heart felt condolences to you're son and his family during this difficult time !

Often, if not usually insurance companies won't pay for preventative screenings. It's sometimes surprising though if you check, self-pay for such screenings isn't as much money as you think. If you did a screening and got any kind of result your insurance company has to pay attention now.

The local hospital was offering low-dose CT scan and sonogram of your lungs and heart for $59(!), no insurance needed. As a many decades former smoker I jumped on this, an amazing bargain for something healthcare related. Took less than an hour overall and got a consultation and results immediatelty. Thankfully all was well. I hate hospitals and doctors as much as anybody but finding problems before they're symptomatic can save your life. DO IT!

Thank you for sharing. There are any number of organizations that can assist with screenings. Internet searches are helpful as well.

Very sorry to learn of this family tragedy, unfortunately with cancer it's all too common. I wish the best to you and your entire family. Hopefully sometime in the very near future a real cure will be discovered, but in the meantime early screening is a excellent option. Good luck, my friend.

Thank you paisan. 👍

Cancer sucks.

I lost my father to cancer when he was 64. Since then, I get blood tested by my GP doctor twice a year. With insurance, I think it costs me like $80/yr for some peace of mind.

I'd also recommend going to an endocrinologist and getting tested. Mine found that I had a couple vitamin deficiencies.

J… your post is very important. Testing and early detection is a must do. I know people that waited or never tested and one day they are at stage 4. There is no stage 5. Summer of 2006 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Caught
It early … chose radiation. Just had bloodwork. Good results. No substitute for early detection.

Very sorry to hear this j2pac. Condolences to you and your family.
I had a Strock in April and I`m still recovering from it. If there`s anything I can do to help, please shoot me a PM.
Take care sir
Thank you Sir. Hopefully your recovery continues full steam ahead.

I posted this in the NPR thread, but I'll repeat it here since the main section and NPR have different member followings.

They've done the PSA thing on me with the bloodwork, and the old trusty rotorooter. I too am a big believer in early detection.

Again, so sorry for your loss.

My daughter's grandmother is on hospice for colon cancer that spread. It's my wife's ex's family, and there's no love loss with us (wife & I) and that family....but it's still her grandmother, and daughter is not taking it well. They were close when she was young. She had a mild stroke some months back and they discovered the cancer inadvertently, but it was already inoperable...so I'll repeat your sentiment about early detection!! She's got a few weeks at the most.

I'm truly sorry to hear this. May God wrap her in his loving arms.
