Come on guys and girls, instead buying your 56th cue you could help out one of the great players you been watching for years keep his legs...?

bad break for him , best wishes. i wish everyone stayed healthy and well in this world.

but no medical insurance.? he is from mexico. where is he a resident? isnt there any federal help, or do they just let tax payers in their country not get medical care. i dont know.

i wont send money as i dont know him or anything about him, but his friends should help him to no end. that's what i would do for a friend.

and those asking for strangers to send money, at least post how many thousands of dollars you sent him.
that is a good start.

I'll be sending some funds.

ADDITIONALLY, if anyone buys the two cue bundle i have listed for sale. I'll donate half to Rafael. He used to hang around the jointed cue on Sacramento where i worked. Absolutely my favorite player to watch. Fearless at the table.

You never seen Martinez play..?You must be new to that pool thing, huh..?

Maybe he has no friends or friends with no money. There is another player you probably don't know either, his name is Tommy Kennedy and he had severe medical problems which he was able to cover due to the financial help of the pool community. And another guy you probably don't know (I won't say his name but his first name rhymes with ''burl'', pretty good player too) donated 500$ at the time and 1000$ to Mika Immonen (who, of course, you don't know)

And I never said or insinuated that one should send thousands or anything like that.

I donated 150$

Are you going to do the same..?

P.s. You should save the '' I wish everyone stayed healthy and well '' and calling for world peace when you enter the miss universe competition...

never seen him, dont know him, dont really have his welfare as part of my life. dont know if the money will do much good, dont know where it will really end up, dont know if it will even matter in the care he gets.

i do feel sorry for people that have issues and cant pay for care.

you seem to care about him and 150 seems like a pittance to what his costs will be.

but if it is a friend you can be sure sky is the limit on help from me. and i wont be begging for money from strangers to pay for strangers.
not my cup to tea.

but if what you do helps him best of luck to both.

Well, since you're not a doctor (I assume) your take on the effectiveness of whatever treatment he is fundraising for will is of utter unimportance.

And you don't feel sorry for people that have issues or you would do something about it.Put your sorries in a sack, as they say.

Plus I am not so sure you would not find a way to wiggle out of a situation to help a friend possibly coming up with excuses to do so.

Martinez may be a stranger to you, as apparently you have little or no interest in professional pool, or you ''would'' know who he is but many of us do know who he is and even though most don't know him personally they have watched and learned from him as I did and am grateful for.

And it's not up to you to judge the amount I donated as it's still infinitely more than you did, understood..?If 65 people gave 150$ the goal would have been reached, such is the concept of a fundraiser, many donations not a single big payment, understood..?

Think about this: If people only donated or helped friends, no welfare organisation, foundation or other project to help the less fortunate would exist.

But let me guess...you couldn't care less about those either...

This is Rafael Martinez in a match where he did not miss a ball.

great player in his time. no doubt. i wish him well.

what i hope his situation does, is shake up some present players and people, that investing whatever you can over time makes you self sufficient or even rich in your old age.
virtually all the old players from my time except for a small few, were penniless later on and that is sad for champions. and so easy not for to happen.

I'm sure you wishing him well means an awful lot to him but a few bucks would mean even more.

Rafael and I have an interesting history together. I consider him a real friend, who I have much respect for. He never backed down from any challenge, on or off the table.

Yes, I donated to his medical care and wish him the best.
Jay, if you got any Rafael stories to share me and I'm sure others would love to hear them..

We're at the U.S.Open two days early, so we go bar hopping in the Hispanic neighborhood looking for a game.

Not much action, mostly two dollar pool. So I ask where the big games are played and get steered. Of course we go there, not knowing it's a hangout for outlaws and drug dealers.

They have a Challenge table for ten a game and up. This looks good and Rafael puts his quarter on the rail. When it's his turn the breaker asks him how much you want to bet? Rafael says, "Whatever you want." The guy just laughs and says, "Whatever?" Rafael says politely, "Yes senor." The guys smiles and says, "How about 100?"

I don't like it. We are in a strange place and the guys all look like thugs and killers, plus it's a big bet. Rafael smiles back and just says okay, bet.

Off they go and Rafael easily wins the first rack of Eight Ball, running the table. I'm thinking it's over, a one game shot. But the guy wants to double the bet. I tell Raffy get paid first, and he asks this guy to pay him the 100. The guy gets all huffy and acts insulted, and he's a big guy. Twice as big as Raf! I don't say another word.

The guy pulls a large wad out of his pocket and peels off 100. Now they play for 200 and Raf breaks and runs out. The guy is really pissed now and some of his buddies are laughing.

The guy looks at Rafael and says, "You're a hustler!" Little Rafael says, "Yes senor, I'm a money player," looked him straight in the eye. The guy didn't know what to say, I could tell. I wasn't sure what was going to happen.

Now this big oaf smiled again and stuck out his hand. He says, "I'm Jose, glad to meet you." It was obvious to me at that moment he admired Rafael's courage and ability.

The game was over and he wanted to buy Raffy a drink. I was greatly relieved.

After we left I asked Rafael what he was going to do if the guy got mad. He looks at me and says, "It's okay Jay I have my knife." He was serious too!
