Rafael Martinez fundraiser

Martinez got into a dust up with Henney at the Rack during the finals of their annual super bowl tourney in the mid nineties

Henney sharked him throughout the match to no avail, RM didn't miss a ball. RM told JH on more than one occasion to stop.

RM breaks the hill rack and has a cosmo out, JH overtly does a slow stroll in his line of sight, RM gets up off the shot and almost buries the butt of his cue in H's chest. Don Samples calms down the hub-bub when he pulls out a 44mag hand cannon from under the blanket he used to keep his lower body warm, Don was paralyzed from getting shot by a 12 gauge in the early 80"S, he lived about 25 yrs after being shot.

R ran out while H coughed and wheezed for at least 10 minutes.

i also knew about R's fondness of knives, bet he always carried one

H is a great guy, when not playing pool

i may have missed it, what's wrong with R's legs?

That's whats wrong

Played him in the 2011 US Open One Pocket.

It went like this:

The next morning I play Rafael Martinez. We speak Spanish during the match and it does not go well for me. Rafael brings the Mexican National Circus to town and does everything but have elephants walk through the tournament room shooting off-angle banks, a couple of masse shots in the middle of the table, kick carom combos, impossible cuts, and on and on. Lou loses 0-4.

I have always hated the circus.

The circus..?

I'm taking the liberty of reposting the link.

Come on guys and girls, instead buying your 56th cue you could help out one of the great players you been watching for years keep his legs...?
What is his current status? This fundraiser is from over a year ago.

You are very welcome.

Are you going to donate?
While I applaud you starting this thread to help a friend, charity should be personal and private. Many have their own reasons why they may or may not choose to donate to any particular charity. We should respect an individual's choice without questioning why or adding public pressure.

There was a time in my life that I didn't have money to gas up my car. Negative money. Beyond broke. That me would be pretty embarrassed to be called out publicly.

We're at the U.S.Open two days early, so we go bar hopping in the Hispanic neighborhood looking for a game.

Not much action, mostly two dollar pool. So I ask where the big games are played and get steered. Of course we go there, not knowing it's a hangout for outlaws and drug dealers.

They have a Challenge table for ten a game and up. This looks good and Rafael puts his quarter on the rail. When it's his turn the breaker asks him how much you want to bet? Rafael says, "Whatever you want." The guy just laughs and says, "Whatever?" Rafael says politely, "Yes senor." The guys smiles and says, "How about 100?"

I don't like it. We are in a strange place and the guys all look like thugs and killers, plus it's a big bet. Rafael smiles back and just says okay, bet.

Off they go and Rafael easily wins the first rack of Eight Ball, running the table. I'm thinking it's over, a one game shot. But the guy wants to double the bet. I tell Raffy get paid first, and he asks this guy to pay him the 100. The guy gets all huffy and acts insulted, and he's a big guy. Twice as big as Raf! I don't say another word.

The guy pulls a large wad out of his pocket and peels off 100. Now they play for 200 and Raf breaks and runs out. The guy is really pissed now and some of his buddies are laughing.

The guy looks at Rafael and says, "You're a hustler!" Little Rafael says, "Yes senor, I'm a money player," looked him straight in the eye. The guy didn't know what to say, I could tell. I wasn't sure what was going to happen.

Now this big oaf smiled again and stuck out his hand. He says, "I'm Jose, glad to meet you." It was obvious to me at that moment he admired Rafael's courage and ability.

The game was over and he wanted to buy Raffy a drink. I was greatly relieved.

After we left I asked Rafael what he was going to do if the guy got mad. He looks at me and says, "It's okay Jay I have my knife." He was serious too!
Balls of steel!! 😎👊👍

Martinez is not a friend of mine but a great player I enjoy watching and learn from.

But you are correct, it's none of my business who donates or not.I was just curious.

To my defense, I did not ask how much he was donating...he could say he would donate and donate 1 $ ;)

Which still would be better than nothing...

seems like it has become clear who is begging for money for someone that may not even be getting it.

or that if he does, it just may go to pay tiny amount off a giant medical bill that will never get paid.

giving money for sympathy, soon becomes pathetic in most cases.

Most of these gofundme things seem like scams that prey on the gullible and don’t go to the supposed beneficiary. More likely some hanger on family members.

plus go fund me takes i believe 15% off the top.

and really someone has a few hundred thousand in medical bills and gets ten grand from donations do you really believe he will send that to the hospital.

and even if it helps him how much does it really. and would he have sent you money if you were in that position?

some would say that doesnt matter. and maybe thats true.

This is not GoFundMe. It is a Canadian website called fundrazr.com that does something similar. According to an online comparison of the two, FundRazr seems to charge slightly less in overhead and they both seem to charge less than 4% deduction.

Like you, I have a problem with charitable requests where I have no idea what the money is actually being used for or who is getting it. If Rafael has continuing problems, and he needs donations, whoever is helping him needs to start a new campaign and provide current status.
