The butt has a threaded insert inside the ferrule, and the stud appears to be threaded directly into the wood of the shaft. That wouldn't work well, if it was installed the way you suggest. If there is a threaded insert in the shaft as well, then yes i agree.

the cost and work involved in converting to slate would be extremely prohibitive. In my opinion, leave it as is. the sentimental value of the table "as is", far outweighs any theoretical benefits of changing it.

I'd sell you a new set of Aramith crown standards, but shipping costs would probably negate any savings... i want to get a set of the dynaspheres.

Popping the slate out literally takes 10 minutes. I don't have any cloth on hand, and i want to upgrade the rails, so i there's no point in leaving it unassembled until i can get it all ordered. At least i can play on it in the meantime.
