Due to the inability of some players from foreign countries to obtain their documents in time, there are nine spots available to enter the US Open 9-Ball Championships starting on October 16 in Norfolk, Virginia. These nine spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Go to...

    US Open 9-Ball 2016 -- Rules

Thanks for your inquiry. Placing the Accu-Rack on the rail is a recipe for problems. As these types of racks have become the norm, we have seen many instances when disputes have ensued as a result of balls in play coming into contact with the rack. It takes just a few seconds to remove it...

    US Open 9-Ball 2016 -- Rules

The hotel prohibits smoking and vaping in the Arena and all surrounding areas. It's impossible to leave those areas, smoke and return to play in less than five minutes. We instituted the rule to emphasize that it simply can't be done, so don't even try it. Last year, a few players tried to smoke...

    US Open 9-Ball 2016 -- Rules

Thank you, Johnnyt, that is high praise, especially coming from you. I mean that sincerely. You often criticize on this forum, which you have the right to do. I like the fact that you are skeptical concerning anything in the pool world. I've been around long enough to see both the good and the...

    US Open 9-Ball 2016 -- Rules

Last year we used the "3-point rule in the center of the table". This year we decided to use the headstring. Winner breaks from the break box combined with the headstring 3-point rule is fair, in my opinion. We will enforce the no pattern racking rule. Shot clocks are not possible because we...

    US Open 9-Ball 2016 -- Rules

Thanks for your comments. We will clarify the "be driven past the headstring" rule at the players' meeting. I think we will use the base of the balI as the point of measurement, but I will confer with Ken Shuman prior to that meeting and make the final determination. We also discussed the push...

    US Open 9-Ball 2016 -- Rules

Great question! Yes, the player who conceded the first game would trail 1 to minus 1. I hope that someday we can afford to hire certified referees for every table and every match. This year we have four certified refs, plus Ken Shuman and me. Two of the four will share afternoon and evening shifts.

    US Open 9-Ball 2016 -- Rules

Yes, it was "past the center of the table" last year. Pattern racking is difficult to prevent, but we have the rule in place and intend to enforce it. The players have a responsibility to monitor their opponents. No shot clocks, but the refs will keep things moving along. Thanks for your comments.

Chris, your request for a Photographer's Press Pass was reviewed and I could not verify that any of the media (Billiards Digest, Pool and Billiards Magazine, AZBilliards, etc.) had requested a pass for you. If you are photographing for the media, kindly forward that information directly to me...

    ESPN Challenge Cup

Where are the results of last week's ESPN Challenge Cup, held in Atlantic City? There were, I believe, four events. Also, I could not find a link to the prize money or "appearance" money. Was that published?

No, Scott Smith will not be part of this year's crew. Ken Shuman will be the MC and the referee in the Accu-Stats TV Arena. In addition to myself, there will be area referees monitoring play on the other tables. I think it's worth noting that the World's #1 Fargo-ranked player, Jiaqing Wu from...

US Open TD I'm pleased that Pat Fleming has selected me to be the Tournament Director for the 2016 US Open 9-Ball Championships. I've know Pat for more than 30 years and we have worked together in the past on many events, including the Accu-Stats Make-It-Happen Invitationals. I was the...

Jayson Shaw victim or defeated foe

Jam, you are correct. A competent referee would have questioned "2-ball?" and Earl would have corrected himself by properly calling the 10-ball before he shot. John Leyman, the TD, should have been there as a referee for this important match or Charlie Williams should have hired a competent...

    Wimpy vs. Balsis, any details?

Here's a copy of the admission ticket for the 1967 $2500 challenge match between Luther Lassiter and Joe Balsis. The present value of $2500 is over $18,000 in the year 2016. They played 10 games of Straight Pool over a five day period. Each game was 150 points. The cost of admission was $2...
