Which CURRENT pro would you recommend a beginner to emulate?

I do know this, when the great Pinoy Champions Efren and Busty play at SMHB they have to respect the fact that the pockets are under 4 inches. So the stroke flourishes get dialed back. I always loved to watch Parica play. We don’t see him around as much. Jose has a great stroke. Mika has a...

Greatest pool hall of all time

You may be mixing up Hard Times and Hollywood Billiards. My experience is that pool players that take on professional players even with generous spots lose most of the time. Hollywood Jack told me that back in the day he could play top players with the 8 and the breaks.

Its been years now. He expired from a heart attack after playing 3-C in Santa Monica on his way back home is what I heard. I played a few times out at his house in the Valley and he had a 3-C table and a Gold Crown. I am not a 3-Cushion player. He used to be my neighbor as both of us lived...

That was back in the day when Keifer was supposed to marry Julia Roberts and it turned out that he was shacked up with a stripper in a flop house across the street from Hollywood Billiards. That was the story back in the day. That corner is all gentrified today but back around 1990 it was a...

Your talking about when it was down in the basement before the earthquake. KS and his buddy Jude used to play at the HAC a lot too. The best player in the basement was " Dana ". He had monkey like strength and could walk down the steps to the basement from the street on his hands.

In fact no. So many of the old hustlers came over to the HAC and they complained about all and sundry, like pool players always do, but they were there for the action smorgasbord. They were incensed at the price of a cheeseburger but the action was easy pickins. Keep in mind the longer you...

I am not a professional pool player. You got to have game for Hard Times. Homey don't play champions. Guys like Tall Bobby started to play at the HAC. I remember when he couldn't form a real bridge. Bobby ran some of the finest nightclubs in town at that time. He now is one of the highest...

Yeah that place is a legend with Cornbread Red playing there and Jew Paul. I know all about that place. But the fact is, as far as rooms go there never was a place like the HAC. There never was the kind of action there was at " the Rack " but nonetheless it still was very sporting. How...

Dude I was a regular then. Tom Salter who ran the place never Eighty Sixed a single pool hustler and some acted very badly on occasion. Most pool room proprietors end up hating the pool players but not Tom, he was an English eccentric. He also was buzzed most of the time. Celebrities would...

Because of the indoor marijuana growing you would be surprised to see where rates are now. To your point about all the hard work I agree. As far as a permits are concerned most landlords will not do deals contingent on you securing a pool permit. The city does not like pool halls.

The way lease rates have appreciated in LA I don’t think a pool room can be run at a profit in a decent location. Notwithstanding the fact that the city hates to hand out pool room permits.

NOLA has always had it’s own distinct culture and that’s what makes it so interesting. J. Hall kicked ass and played forever to win. About five years ago he came through SMHB and lost. I took half the action. Right before that he had won a big One Hole tournament in Mississippi. He has put...
