    Consistency

I have to disagree. Changing cues has rarely if ever helped anyone improve. It's not about the piece of wood in your hands. It's about what the player does with it. Consistency comes from doing the same things the same way every time. Rock solid stroke mechanics and pre-shot/shooting routines...

why look at the contact point from 2 positions???

As others have said, this gives you a more precise view of the intended contact point, as well as the line to the pocket you need the target to travel on. Visualization is a critical part of the pre-shot routine. The more information your eyes send to the brain, the clearer the shot becomes in...

    8 ball patterns

Since every layout is different, there is no standard rule. I usually divide the table into thirds if possible to keep my shots shorter. Then I try to save the area where the 8 is for last. Of course, if you have problem balls, the whole thought process changes. Steve

    What is pool's key fundamental?

If I had to pick one thing, I would have to say a consistent, repeatable stroke.

    Consistency, consistancy, consistincy

Consistency comes from doing the same things, the same way, every time. First thing you need is a consistent, repeatable stroke. This is something any qualified instructor can work with you to develop. Once you have the stroke mechanics, you need to build your routines and checklists for the way...

    Need some help

I frequently have my students think backward, ie, where do you want to have the cue ball for the nine ball? Where do you need to be on the 8 to get that position? and where do you need to be on the 7 to get that position on the 8? That get's them thinking about the entire pattern and build a...

Absolutely. Moving toward the more snooker style stance is often the only adjustment needed to compensate for exceptional assets. Steve

    I started lessons last week

You need to be having this discussion with your instructor, not on the internet. It sounds like you are looking for someone to give you the answers you want. Either you have complete faith in your instructor, or you find another instructor. Doing anything else isn't being fair to your instructor.

So I'm trying to pick out my first cue.

Consistency is the greatest benefit from having your own cue. Most production cue brands have similar characteristics. The shaft needs to be straight and it needs a good tip. Beyond that, most of the cost goes into the decoration of the butt. I do recommend investing in a nice hard case to...
