    You giving the 8

I only give called balls, and I put it behind the 1 on the side he prefers breaking from; its best when they alter their break trying to make the ball. People will chase the 8 so hard that they end up scratching, losing the cue ball and leaving no shot, or not sinking anything. The 8 will get...

    Anyone try to hustle someone...

I think technically, since they were playing 9 ball... It was a 5 pack in 9 ball. I do get confused occasionally.

****Balance Right extension that doesn't fit****

That's right, I have a monster cue that hits a ton with 5 joints if you include the tip. That's my ace in the hole if I offer a game where the handicap includes shooting with the cue of my choice.

    KO's Pattern Racking Secrets.....

I could bowl 300 if I racked my own pins... those machines always leave gaps!

The safest bet is to specify in written communication, like email, what the terms are. Make it clear that your obligation ends at getting it to the friend.

9-ball Strategy: Playing someone much worse than you

Pretty much what's been said... Make them take low percentage shots early in the rack. If they take a swing at a thin cut on the 3 ball and get lucky, there's not much worry of them running out the rest. Playing safe on the 7 or 8 is too late to fade a lucky roll. If they have a jump cue, let...

    Magic rack on nap cloth?

A good quality triangle rack is my suggestion. I doubt any template would behave differently if your cloth is thick enough that the template isn't sitting flat. Or maybe you could get one of those clothes lint shaver things and go to town.

    Speed Control: The Secret Ingredient

What keeps the shooter from just rolling the 8 in the side and keeping the cueball there?

    Break butt material selection

I don't build cues, so this is an honest question. I know different woods and construction techniques influence how a cue feels... it seems like you're hinting that it'll be an undesirable hit. What would make it so, the weight or the material?

    Break butt material selection

These are good bits of info to look into, thanks all. I can't emphasize enough how much I appreciate any serious consideration of what is, probably, a stupid idea.

    Build my fat girl cue

Nobody has to know you did it. It'll be our secret... Aren't you even a little bit curious? The abomination I desire is discussed in a different thread. http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=401431 I understand all of the arguments for and against heavier break cues; I just want to...

    Cue balls? Whats your fav?

I prefer the measles ball because of the seemingly more equal reactions between it and the object balls. I had to buy a red circle cue ball for my own table because it's almost invariably used in the tournaments local to me. The red circle ball isn't bad, but with fast cloth the characteristics...

The real reason Mike Dechaine withdrew from the World Straight Pool

I'm guessing it's because the words after "but" aren't a complete sentence, but I'm not a word scientist. As for MD, if he's happy with his decision then who am I to say he should've done anything different?

What do you do with chalk when it gets low?

When the sides get to the paper (I'm a drill/swipe hybrid chalker) I throw the cube away (or leave it if I'm out at a hall). Since I basically throw away 80% of the cube, I thought I'd try sanding it down on a coarse sanding block. It worked ok, but the difference in height of the sides felt...

    Calling all 9-ball racking experts

When I press all the balls together in the rack, aside from what's been mentioned, I make sure to lift the back of the rack first, and slide it forward and off. It helps keep the front 3 balls from sticking to the rack (if it's a wood rack, the tightening sometimes pushes the balls into the...

    Break butt material selection

Regarding the required speed- I don't know. Everyone's different, but in my case it seems like I have a maximum, consistent speed regardless of weight. I bought an identical jump/break cue to the one I use and took out all of the weight, putting it around 17 oz. I know that I break better with...

    Break butt material selection

Looking at suppliers, I've found different grades listed in 4 foot lengths with the weight of each grade/diameter given on the info page. I plugged that info into a weight calculator for a conical frustum (29 inches @ 1.25/.840) and it put me in the ballpark of 27-28 oz for the butt, not taking...

    Break butt material selection

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like the weight is the biggest detriment in using phenolic rod. I use a jump break right now that I added a second weight bolt to; the original had enough room to screw in and add the extra. It weighs in the neighborhood of 24-25 oz now, and I like it. The...
