    Merry Widow

At some point it would be productive to select a 'glossary of terms' that most are comfortable with. This one appears to be a good place to start: http://billiards.colostate.edu/glossary.html

Finish to make up the wrap grove?

FWIW, you did the right thing in refusing the work. Not all would have. There are very few who are actually equipped to do a compatible McD UV finish. The ambitious client would be best served at this point by ceasing his attempts and sending the cue to McD and have them make the necessary repairs.

    Stainless Joints

SS jnt collars may have been the rage at the 'time' but times change. IMO, SS was the best they could come-up with. We've advanced. The stainless steel joint collar and the pilot go hand in hand; literally. It was the concept that allowed ill-fitting parts to be used to center a shaft to the...

question about cutting handle tenons for A JOINT and butt sleeve

No I'm not. Where the hell did you get that ? You know my position on coring. I'm not suggesting coring at all here. I'm quite capable of speaking and writing for myself; I don't need a translator. I'm talking a B/S tenon and only a tenon, 1 1/2 - 2" deep into the base of the wrap-handle wood. I...

question about cutting handle tenons for A JOINT and butt sleeve

.875 - 7/8" B/S tenon dia. seems to be gaining in popularity of late. Likely due to the possible warp issue. The concept has been around for a while. My contribution to this thread is that the B/S tenon doesn't need to be of the same wood as the wrap-handle. Coupled with a 7/8" dia., warp is...

    True sneaky

Before this gets too deep in speculation, someone needs to count the TPI. I believe the pin to be a std 3/8x10. KJ

    Working with laminated shafts

Block sand while it's spinning. Little to no pressure. Let the grit cut the peaks. Don't burnish, it will restrict sealer from entering the wood. Also, if your paper is worn-out it's doing it's own burnishing. HTHs, KJ

That's exactly right though I'm not challenging anybody to anything. We use what we use because it works best for us. Your requirements may be different. The whole point of this exercise is to say that not every finish is right for everyone. KJ

Thank You Joey and I share your opinion. A/C is the nuts for the 'indy' CM. Let's break this down for clarity. UV & A/C are the top dogs in the finish dept. There's a reason that the big cue manufacturers have gone to UV; they can afford it. Also, they have determined that UV works best in the...

    South Bend Heavy 10

It would appear that you've done rather well. The larger bore spindle in the SB is a huge upgrade from the Atlas. Great trade; both buyer and seller are happy with their new toys. That's as it should be. KJ

I understand. Because of your variables it would be difficult to place a price-tag using undefined numbers. The big picture approach would ask how many cues per gal. Then you could attribute cost per cue. I was just wondering what cost comparison would be as I'm sure others were. $1,100/gal...

In the interest of equal disclosure, the reader may want to know how CA & AC stack-up price wise. My guess is that both Eric's CA and my AC are at the extremes and the opposite ends of their respective ranges. While Eric's CA seems a bit pricey, I don't believe that we have the numbers to break...

Your machine has more than 30 hrs on it. The amount of chipped paint above the tailstock locking nut says so. It took more than 30 hrs to do that. More like 30 yrs. Not knocking your machine, I have one though yours is a newer model. The ways on that machine may not be 'hard' so be mindful of...

For those who think that getting a little epoxy on your hands is no big deal, you may want to reconsider. It's not the epoxy itself that's going to cause you problems, it's the method you use to remove it. Most who use epoxy know that acetone is a great thinner and will quickly remove epoxy that...

    Linen ID?

Wrap channel depth can be adjusted, up or down, by a competent C-Tec. Some of the Predator cues with 'rubber-wrap' have an incredibly deep channel, .065/.075" per side. Those get built-up with wood veneer to a depth that now accepts linen, leather, cork or whatever. The point that I'm trying to...

You've found what works for you and so have I. Lets hope that the OP finds what works for him. Who doesn't want to be happy with their cue finish ? I'm not pushing any particular system. I'm sharing my opinions based on my experience. I believe that's what was asked for. YMMV My opinions...

    Linen ID?

The only thing I'm able to offer is regarding wrap-channel depth. If the linen is .031" I would cut the channel for a .026/.027" depth per side. As the linen is pressed it will flatten both top and bottom. I don't like to sand on linen as it thins the cordage and not always equally. Done...

I shoot auto-clear (about 20 yrs now) and have stopped looking for anything else. When talking total-cue finish, you won't find anything better or faster except for maybe UV. I can't recommend Solarez. We tried it but weren't satisfied. You want the good stuff ? Spend big money. CA is usable for...
