    Hand Spread Spot

A gaff game for sure I once talked a local shortstop into giving me a hand SPAN on EVERY SHOT, INCLUDING HIS, by offering to lay him $100 to $10. I guess he figured it was worth $10 to see how the game would pan out. We were going to play a race to three, my $100 against his $10, but after two...

looking for advice -- equipment to use in making a commercial pool DVD

You are right, this is not a good analogy. When I suggested that I could decide first and then get the financing and education, I didn't say I should "decide to wing it." I would "get the financing AND EDUCATION" and then start the project. I'm thinking you may have the wrong idea about what I...

looking for advice -- equipment to use in making a commercial pool DVD

I think Freddy the Beard just used a one camera setup and did OK with it IMHO. Wow, that's an awfully discouraging comment! I'm thinking the order is wrong here. How about if I decide first, and then get the financining and education? I have to fault you for an incorrect use of the word "few"...

looking for advice -- equipment to use in making a commercial pool DVD

Thanks, Scott, I will definitely consider that overhead camera idea. I am trying to recall Freddy's DVDs on bank pool and I don't think he used one. But I can see how it could be very helpful.

looking for advice -- equipment to use in making a commercial pool DVD

I hear you. We will definitely be using a tripod and wireless lavaliere mike. And I will check out Final Cut Pro. Whoops! I see that Final Cut is for a Mac and all my computers are PCs.

Dr. Dave, thanks a lot for your very informative reply! In fact, I think I'll just suggest that YOU do the video for the instructional DVD! :grin-square::grin::smile: I will definitely consider you recommendations very seriously.

looking for advice -- equipment to use in making a commercial pool DVD

I know some of the AZ people have considerable expertise about camcorders and making DVDs. I have an old friend who is planning to make an instructional DVD and I may be helping him with this project. I've fiddled around with camcorders a bit, but don't have any deep knowledge about them. I am...

    Jay Helfert, re: Gary Spaeth

Hey, Tom, back when I went over there the tournaments were run by Charlie Sayler, aka 9-Ball Charlie. Charlie is no longer with us. Vince ran them later and as you say, he may have had a character flaw or two.

    Jay Helfert, re: Gary Spaeth

Gary - a couple of short stories Gary, in his prime was freakish good at banks, literally unbeatable. Back about 1980 I used to play in a partners tournament at Western Bowl in Cincinnati, I think it was on Monday nights. Gary was a regular at that tournament and a few times, before the...

to ... jay helfert, bill porter, et al.

Go for it! A few years ago Freddy Bentivegna and I traded some emails about this idea. We planned to get people together at the DCC and had even developed a shooting script for the project. Fred was having some health problems at that time (knee operation) and we never got the project rolling...

A couple of photos from the Dallas pool scene in the 1960s

Yeah, I wasn't there that night; I probably got the story from Alfie Taylor. As for the Titanic book, I read one some years ago, but I don't recall the title. Why don't you check and post the title in this thread. None of these young'uns have even heard of him. I'd bet that if you gathered some...

Ti had very little formal education, so it seems unlikely that he did the math behind this proposition. It is my belief, though I can't prove it, that some of Ti's propositions, the ones that involved probabilities/statistics, came from mathematicians/statisticians. While he didn't seem to have...

Might have done it once, not likely to do it twice.... Actually, as Dick McMorran correctly pointed out, Vernon (the muscle guy) was probably more accurately described as a bully than as a tush hog. On the other hand, he did do some money collecting in his day and there are some stories about...

Dick, I "borrowed" the photo from a Website that showed pics of "Arkansas Pool Players." You might recognize a few on this site: http://imageevent.com/coram/arkansaspoolplayers

The age seems about right, but I was not around Dallas much after 1969, so I can't tell you about the early 1970s.

Jay, the only guy with those initials I could think of who might knock you out playing one hole is Jack Cooney. Didn't know he was ever at Times Square Cue Club, but who knows.
