Removing a crack Collar & Butt Cap

Thanks! Good suggestions. I didn't consider the router might break it loose..... that could be bad. Think I'll try using the parting tool to cut in (that will give me a clean break point), if that doesn't get it loose I'll turn the rest down. Thanks again

Removing a cracked Collar & Butt Cap

Quick question: I have 2 cues to repair. One with a cracked Collar and another with a crack in the plastic Butt Cap. How to you guys remove them? I was thinking of turning most of it off with a router. I am worried that if I use a lathe bit it will grab in the crack and rip off the entire thing...

Is there a 4 jaw chuck (independent) for taig type cue lathes?

Bill, they are around but I don't see them often. There was one on Ebay about 6 months ago. Try asking Chris, Bassel, or Anthony (tag on AZ). FYI, I thought about buying that one on Ebay but figured it was probably more trouble than it was worth since I can shim something pretty quick...

I am pretty sure the ones from years ago used Asbestos. Mostly likely linen. Why don't you ask Joe?

    Lathe question

With the Grizzly Metal lathe: Like the person above said, you'll want 30" between centers Its big and bulky. You'll need help moving it, possibly hiring Riggers Shipping could be expensive If you buy a decent sized lathe you'll need 3-Phase power requiring an additional motor, phase converter...

    Titanium

Does Titanium burn? I don't remember that. I remember machining Magnesium and we kept a bucket of sand close by just in case it caught fire. I would save up all the chips until a had a floor dry bag full and take it outside and light it up. Burned white hot.

    Titanium

Titanium is tough but its not really super hard. I thought Iconel and Monel were much worst to machine. Look online and and you should find a speed and feed chart. Or look in a Machinist Handbook

    Which boring bar??

1/4 .230 1.600 2-1/2 1-428-BB2301600 That will do pretty much everything you need to do. Chris sells a carbide tipped bar that is bigger and will go deeper for Butt Sleeves and such.

    What size tool bit handle

You can go as big as your tool holder will allow. Just remember that the cutting edge of the tool will no longer be on center. If you buy a QCTP like mentioned above its easy to change the height, not so with the fixed height holders.

    Machinist

You can also try Videos and get a small lathe like a Taig or Mini lathe. You won't learn all the ins and outs but they will give you a really good start. Some of the people to look for: Darrell Holland (has several including a series for gunsmithing) David Burns Tom Wade Rudy Kouhoupt (sp?)...

    Question about respirators

Same mask and filters I use. The P100 cartridges were called HEPA when I bought them. Same thing though. Make sure you have a good seal when you wear it. Don't make it too tight though. I can wear it for a several hours without it bothering me

    Cuesmith threading attachment

Thanks for the links. When you posted this before and I was looking into what all it would take to get this completed I found inserts that had 3 or 4 teeth and a hole through the center that you could it mount on an arbor. Sorry, don't have that link any more but a quick search found these. Keep...

    Lathe accident. WARNING!!!!

Good guess. I saw several accidents when I was a machinist. Guy with long hair didn't have it tied up because 'he was only running a drill press'. Got caught on the old greasy spindle and scalped him. Another guy on a boring mill. Interrupted cut on a pull-down cam. Was taking a file to...

    lathe

Have to wait until he adds more pics. The Pivoting Headstock sounds interesting. Wonder if its a pain to get the centerline back after you turn it? I like that the leadscrew is underneath the bed. Looks like its engage like a regular metal lathe, I like that as well. Like to hear more about...
