If you are simply asking which shot is easiest to execute (follow or draw), it's follow for me. Simply because one diamond of draw requires more swing speed in the stroke to accomplish than one diamond of follow.

I would throw Wes Hunter's cues into the mix as I have more than once heard his cues referrerd to as the poor man's Southwest. I have one and it is a stiff hitter but I've never had a chance to hit with a Southwest so can't say for sure.

Strength has nothing to do with it. It's speed and technique along with accuracy. Perhaps you are gripping the cue too tight. Try a lighter grip.

I definitely wouldn't stain it gray and I would keep the cue. Those old D series McDermott cues are great playing cues. I had a D21. If you decide to sell, you won't have too much trouble selling it. Hard to say what it would bring in this market.
