    Tip....or front of grip hand?

Great! I don't think it will be a placebo effect. Although your hand is your point of feel for the shot, it's your arm that does the moving. I would guess that in at least 90% of a player's repertoire of shots, it is most efficient for the hand to remain passive. So many people, both players...

How many hours of lessons should a beginner try to cram into a couple days?

Making changes to your fundamentals with a tournament a couple of weeks away is challenging. Just pick a few things and work on those and don't go overboard with the changes. Let your instructor prioritize them for you. A few hours of lessons will be plenty to do that. Then focus on playing the...

    Tip....or front of grip hand?

I'm more of a Caddyshack kind of person. Just be the ball. ⛳ But back to your original post, Ken --- I think what you wrote is fine, only it's not really an underhand throw, although I know what you mean --- but taking it literally, your hand would be under the cue --- palm up. I would just...

What does that even mean --- "drawing your tip on the cue"?? Have you created your own language?

Some drag their cues all around on the cloth? LOL What the heck? Hitting the cloth is a necessary element of shooting pool, particularly if you use a pendulum-type stroke or even of you are executing a draw shot. I've been training players for 30 years to intentionally scrape the cloth in...

    Your "first five" pointers...

What's your technique in keeping the cue level? Do you manipulate your grip hand through the stroke or do you drop your elbow? It has to be one of the two. Also, why do you think it's important to do that?

Looking for simple way to take decent video of myself.

I've given up using VLC. I think it's horrible in playback unless you watch the clip all the way through with no stops and starts and reversals.

    Your "first five" pointers...

I agree with this in the importance of good stance and balance in the process of bridging. It also has to be coupled with an awareness of bridge-hand pressure --- particularly during training. Good balance and stance gets you nearly there, with a bit more work to do.

Best drills to do after a long layoff?

If you've only got a few weeks, then play nothing but 9 ball to prepare for the tournament. Play alone. Play against other players. But play only 9 Ball. You can do drills after the tournament is over.

    Student Union Pool

I got lucky. My college, Queens College in NYC, had a brand new student union with 25 Gold Crowns with Centennial balls back in the mid 70s. Spent all my time between classes there and went through the ACUI tournament system. Won my college and then the Regionals, and placed 3rd in the...

WPA will no longer ban players who join Matchroom

Yeah, nah. Sounds like you think this is all the WPA's fault. Do you really want a TV production company to control global pool and all the players too? They've been at it for decades. Ask Matchroom how much they made and how much of that went to the players over all those years compared to what...

WPA will no longer ban players who join Matchroom

Both organizations found a way to compromise. That's good news. This means that Matchroom is acknowledging the WPA as the world governing body. That wasn't the case before when they were in conflict. Matchroom, a TV production company, was trying to control pool on a global scale. I'm sure the...

    Your "first five" pointers...

Well, I don't think we're disagreeing here. Of course, older people will be even more susceptible to injury due to repetitive strains than younger people. One player who came to me with intense shoulder pain from repetitive pressure was barely 30 years old. I don't consider that person old...

    Your "first five" pointers...

Glad you like my suggestion. But trust me on this, it's not an aging issue. I've seen perfectly healthy young people with shoulder pain from leaning too hard on their bridge hand. It's one of those repetition-type injuries that creep up on them over time. And by the way, if they're leaning hard...

    Your "first five" pointers...

I'll address your #1: Putting weight on the bridge hand can make a beginner think he has to lean hard on that hand. Be careful how you say it. Leaning hard on the hand can cause tendonitis in the shoulder. I've seen players in severe pain because of it. You're right in that the bridge hand must...

    Increasing stroke speed?

You have to be specific in what you want to know. Like for example: "I'm having trouble generating enough speed for this particular shot." There are different techniques you can apply for different types of shots. But if you're looking for a general answer in how to increase speed, it won't be...
