Input on best quality shaft blanks?

You know, I ordered a bunch of low end shaft wood from them for some jump cues I was doing and it was too good to use. It was better then some other wood I had paid top dollar for.

Are some players better than others at getting in the zone?

I think most certainly. You can see it happening. It is like they are dimming the lights on everything around them but the table. I don't know about the short races such as in tournaments, but I have seen it many times gambling. They seem to be able to will themselves there.

    New production cues vs old

I think back that far they were pretty much custom cue companies. They only real production companies 40 years ago were, Palmer, Viking, Meucci was pretty new. These American companies made pretty nice cues back then.

    linen wrap is to slippery

You can rub some paste wax such as Butchers wax or Briwax into it. Let it dry and buff it off and it will feel tacky. I do it to my own cue because I like that feel. http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/85C25/(H)-BRIWAX-CLEAR.aspx?gclid=CJKjzrSKgMgCFYUUHwodJDoGKQ

    Building wrap area with veneer

I have done a few like that with cotton string and coated with finish as a final wrap. It soaks up the finish and when you are done it is the same as a cue with no wrap. Because the cotton presses so smooth you can't feel where the wrap is at all. If done in say black it really looks great...

    Pool table identification help

I think a lot of the tables with various name placards on them were in fact Brunswick. A local supplier would attach their own placard.

    Building wrap area with veneer

I have done it many times but I didn't use veneer. I used cotton string like a kite string. I would do a few layers till it was about right and coat it with some epoxy or spray finish. Sand it smooth and do the linen wrap. Comes out perfect and it is pretty much fool proof, actually very easy.

    Looking to buy a lathe

I am a little confused. If you buy a Hightower or similar cue lathe there is no learning curve? You set it up and you are somehow miraculously empowered with the knowledge and wisdom to build and repair cues? Most cue lathes on the market are Rube Goldberg setups that mimic what you would do...

    Looking to buy a lathe

You can get a mini lathe and a used wood lathe. With a few jigs a gizmos you can do a lot of cue work. With the wood lathe you can do sanding, wrapping, polishing and a host of things in the way of cue work. No matter how much equipment a cuemaker has every cuemaker also has a wood lathe...

    12 Rail Challenge

On most any 9 foot table I can drive a cueball 9 rails. I can't really see a pattern where I can reach 11 or 12 rails. Can you show the rail pattern?

    South Bend

I am not able to view it. Having said that I have looked at a zillion old lathes and they can be from Gems to junk no matter how they look in a picture. One of the big bonuses with some of these used lathes are all the stuff they come with. Often worth more then you are paying for the lathe...

Kind of Sad, Minnesota Fats Cue . . .

I think it is real for several reasons. I think you should do some more research. I doubt he had any interest in an auto auction it may have been a paid gig. It was only 20 years ago see what you can find on the auction. They may have even had an ad advertising Fats appearance or you may even...

Balance Rite Extension Defect 2015 *Video*

If it is going to have collars you turn the ends of the raw piece and glue on the collars at the same time create centers . The rest is done in one procedure between centers. Take a pass or two to true it up and size the diameter. Then at the same time with a bit ground for the purpose face...

Etiquette if playing in a tournament with childhood idol

In the same vein as your sentiments you express in this post. Why do you post here or on any other forums for that matter. What makes you think anyone gives a sh!t what you think about anything? It is probably so you can read your own words and get pleasure in your own self perceived...

With all due respect, and I say that in the greatest sense of the word. You are one of the most respected people who post on here. Building those extensions is machining 101. It would be the kind of project for someone who just got a lathe and was running it for the first time and they would...

    Cues Stolen...

He tempted them with something that obviously looked valuable. It is not usually an accident, they are often out checking out cars in parking lots for something that looks like it is worth stealing. You don't think it makes more sense to not show them what you have? That is just plain stupid...

Etiquette if playing in a tournament with childhood idol

That goes without saying. A lot of those top players when playing in open tournaments and playing locals will use the "Awe factor" to their advantage. I have seen a lot of pro's win matches against locals that they should not have won. It is as if the local is afraid to win for fear the champ...
