Not to hijack, but did you consider the tournament 3030 as a less expensive Simonis alternative? I've played on it once, and really liked it. For what it's worth, I have olive cloth on my home table (Simonis 860) and everyone who plays on it comments that they like the color.

If you want to come up to the grim, ugly part of Indiana (Northwest Indiana) I've got a team for ya. It's quite a drive for you, but you'll get to breathe some really disgusting air from East Chicago, Hammond and Gary!

I also use both one piece schmelke's with the bocote butt for house cues, and a schmelke cocobolo sneaky for a house cue. Call them and tell them what you want as far as the taper goes.

If I was going to put my table in my basement, and couldn't accomodate a one piece slate.... AND I was cool with either drop pockets or ball return.... At that point is there any reason to get the three piece slate Pro am over the professional?

My impression is that there are a decent number of straight pool players in the Chicago area. Red Shoes billiards in Alsip (near Midway airport) has a straight pool league. Not sure how many guys play in it, but I know that there are some strong players.
