My first impressions after 3 weeks of league play

I just joined a team and started playing in my local APA league (Illiana, serving NW Indiana and South Chicago 'burbs). I wanted to share my first impressions, and also ask a few questions. By way of background--I got a home table two years ago, and love pool. But I'm not very good- an APA 3...

For under 8k what table would you buy?

Would you guys that say the pro am still give the same answer if the table wasn't on the first floor and you had to get it with a three piece slate instead of the one piece? Put another way, does a pro am with a three piece slate play much different than the professional with the three piece slate?

Who is the best pool playing Celebrity

I played against Matt when we were in college. I have no idea how (or if) he plays now, but at the time ('88-'90) we were just bangers.

    Pool hall wisdom

Nice list. I'd like to add that there's always a guy saying "I suck now but I payed my way through college playing pool." And "I suck on a 9 foot but I rule on a bar box"

    Illiana APA League?

I've never played league pool before, and was just going to ask how was your experience, were the people pleasant, was the league well-run, etc. I'm not that hot of a player, but love pool. I guess my most important question is were the peoply mainly cool or jackasses?

Ghost WITHOUT BIH... work up drill

I do an almost identical drill, and find it very useful. I'm like a D to D+ 9 ball player, if such a thing exists, so I'm usually just playing the 3 ball, 4 ball, or 5 ball ghost. The only variation that I have from your system is that I break a regular 9 ball break then take the low balls...

    Phil Cappelle 8 ball book

I own the Capelle 8 ball book and happen to be re-reading it this week. It is very, very helpful. I also own Play your best 9 Ball, Play Your Best Straight Pool and Play Your Best Pool. All of them worth reading, although I suppose if you have the first three (or two) you don't really need...

I'm sick of these sayings. If I hear them just once more.....

I'm happy to say that I've never seen anyone do that in a pool hall, but boy did it annoy me in the movie.

    Upcoming shoulder surgery

My shoulder used to pop out of the socket regularly, and I had a surgery called "capsular reconstruction" (I think that was it) to tighten things up. The surgery was in 1995. I echo those who said that the key is to do your physical therapy and stick with it. It took me a long time to get a...

    Zen and Pool

I've read Max Eberle's book and enjoyed it. I'd also like to read more on the topic. Relaxation and concentration techiniques is something that I've been thinking about a lot lately, perhaps because I have a stressful job, and home life. (not whining or anything, and I know we all have our...

    Breaking on a budget...

I bought a Billiard Warehouse house brand jump break for well under $150, and it came with phenolic tip. I think it breaks very well, although I don't have much to compare it to.

    Pool and music

This is kind of an "out there" question, but here goes: If you guys were making a film about pool, what kind of music soundtrack would you score it with? Put another way, what kind of music do you associate with pool? That's not to say what exactly do you like listening to while playing, but...

    Teaching young kids to play

I have a home table, and 5.5 year old twins. How early do you guys think you can start teaching kids to play? They show interest in the game already. We play our own version of eight ball where I let them roll the object balls in the pocket with their hands, and I play with my cue. It...

Any decent pool room in San Franscisco

If you're in the East Bay, Thalassa in Berkeley is a nice room. I was just there a few weeks back while visiting the area.

    Florida Keys in April

I also lived in Key West, from '01-'02. I recall a bar table or two in Key West, but not much serious pool. I wasn't playing much then myself, so I wasn't looking out for it. Anyway- if you need restaurant or bar recommendations, let me know.

What is the Most Ill-Conceived Pool Product You Have Ever Come Across?

I have a confession to make... My home table came with a 9 ball rack and a regular triangle rack. When I play 9 ball I usually rack with the 9 ball rack. I can understand that there's no need for one, as I can rack 9 balls with the regular triangle rack. But do they actually rack worse? Can...
