Trip report: I traveled all the way to China to play in a Heyball Masters Tour event

Unfortunately had to edit for length - not too many people want to read for 20 minutes and hear about my vacation stories! Food-wise Zhijiang is in the Hunan province of China, which is tied for the region with the spiciest food. Asking for something extra mild would get you something with a...

Trip report: I traveled all the way to China to play in a Heyball Masters Tour event

Great time. My teammates were a lovely bunch, the tournament was unique, and town was very fun to explore. From talking to spectators, I learned a lot more about the pool culture and the rating system they have over there (subjective tiers 1-11, similar to APA except over a much wider range)...

What do you think would happen if there were no handicaps, in any leagues or tournaments, and all tournaments were Open to all skill levels?

In a league or tournament? Absolutely! American pool culture is so odd in this regard. People would pay thousands for the opportunity to play against a famous tennis pro or a basketball pro, and yet in pool it's somehow a bad thing to play anyone better than you.

Trip report: I traveled all the way to China to play in a Heyball Masters Tour event

I had, but only twice. I got notice that I was going only two weeks before leaving. I had played Heyball competitively before and did well. My first match was competitive and I played well but my opponent simply played better. The second match I got matched with one of the 30 best players in...

Trip report: I traveled all the way to China to play in a Heyball Masters Tour event

I just got back from a two week trip in China to play in the latest JOY Billiard's Heyball Masters Tour event. It was an all expenses paid trip, my first time playing in an international competition, and a completely eye opening experience. The quick summary The events in China are massive...

Muscle up « and » play pool!

Thorsten and Jasmin Ouschan and Donny Mills would disagree with this entire thread 💪 I think there's a lot of confirmation bias due to the dominance of Asians in pool and gym culture not being as mainstream in Asia. I just came back from China where pool halls outnumbered gyms 2:1.

Another tournament, another win by Aloysius Yapp - 2025 Formosa Cup Taipei Open

What a year this man is having. Here's the stream of the final vs Ko Ping Chung: It was a smaller prize pool, but very solid field. Brackets can be found at https://challonge.com/Stage2_AdultGroup

Never seen this before - asking the for a ref for video review

I was watching some recent Heyball tournament videos and just came across a player asking for a video review, which I've never seen before. (Start at 2:20 if the video doesn't already take you there) I'm amazed that he did it right as his opponent got on the 8 and his opponent didn't bat an...

    (Un)Popular Opinion on Fargo Rate

Agreed, I feel like the algorithm is way too sticky. I wish they would adjust it so that the weight given to past games dropped off faster. AFAIK, games after 3 years count half as much as a game played today, which seems too high. I feel like they should count closer to like 25% or something.

Matchroom/U.S. Open is leaving Atlantic City

I was under the impression that most of the refs used for the events are local, other than a few special exceptions like Marcel.

    US Open 08/18-23

IIRC Niels has mentioned in his videos that he doesn't practice nearly as much as he used to. It sounds like he's more a case of practicing smart with short but intense practice sessions.

    Heyball and Orcollo

Pretty funny given all the wax gate business. His opponent seemed like a grouch though and I thought it was out of line to accuse Orcollo so aggressively. I speak Chinese and his tone was quite forceful when complaining to the ref and talking about how he's 100% certain the ball had been...

    Corey Deuel still good? Fargorate

Yes, but it's still extremely sticky. Games three years ago still count for 50% the weight of new games. In the hypothetical example that he's actually playing like a 740, I'd bet it'd still take a couple years for his rating to drop under 750.
