What to put on the ferrule end of the shaft to prevent chalk from sticking into the wood?

Clean your hands before playing. Proper chalking with YOUR OWN chalk no more than 1/2 gone as already mentioned. Never share your chalk, a lot of players don't know how to chalk. NEVER lay your cue on the table. Many public tables are saturated in chalk. Wearing a glove will help. When you are...

    What type of tenon?

They are nice for breaking but they hit way too soft for efficient jumping. Of course phenolic is unforgiving for breaking but great for jumping. You need a very straight stroke to break consistently with phenolic. My break stroke isn't good enough. This is why I dislike jump/break cues. They...

WTB Striking Line Aiming Trainer Template

Too bad that Gordon isn't making these anymore. They are really nice. You should buy the the long track. It's a great tool for diagnosing stroke flaws.

    What type of tenon?

You are more likely to pop the tip off before breaking the tip. Polycarbonate tips need a very stable base. If you install one on a softer ferrule you're likely to have problems. I install them on capped Ivorine 4.

Has anyone installed a permanent rubber wrap?

Good point. My case is segmented. I've had a rubber (I think that it's actually silicone) wrap on my carom cue for 5+ years. A wrapped cue pressed snugly into a tube type case would be a disaster if it unrolled inside the tube.

Has anyone installed a permanent rubber wrap?

Atlas, Tiger, Longoni.... offer rubber wrap grips that you roll on. They aren't intended to fit into a groove. They are very grippy. They're popular with 3C players.

    VCarve pro 11 for tapering

To be clear, when I referred to CueCut as a 'one trick pony', I meant it as a complement. It is an application specific solution focused on one primary purpose, cutting stock from simple dowels to compound tapers with a very well thought out, easy to use interface that is targeted specifically...

    VCarve pro 11 for tapering

You can create tapers using VCarve, GCODE and CueCut. My preference is CueCut. It's simple, intuitive and hard(er) to screw things up. It's a one trick pony that performs it's trick reliably well. Unless your spinner is dead nuts in line with your long axis, your measured results will differ...

    Adding a groove/wrap question..?

Sorry. (See the short answer);) If you search "volume of a truncated cone", there is a calculator where you can enter the diameters and length and it will calculate volume for you. By comparing the before and after volume, you will see that a very small percentage is removed. This small loss is...

    Adding a groove/wrap question..?

Short answer...not much. Measure large and small diameter where wrap will go. You already know the wrap length. Calculate the volume of a truncated cone. Reduce the diameters by the wrap groove depth x 2. Solve for volume again. Look up wood density for wood type removed. Calculate weight of...

    Laminate shaft split

If he's a pool player, he might not like how the conical taper feels in his closed bridge. He probably chose his predator it for it's low deflection. Billiard shafts are short, stout and stiff. They are not low deflection. 3C players are always chasing that 'thin hit' with a big stroke at a...

    Laminate shaft split

A predator laminate shaft is a poor choice for 3C. The shaft is hollow for 5 inches at the tip end. Many billiard cues have a conical taper. The joint is thicker and the cue is shorter. The larger carom balls are 25% heavier. Extreme side spin is often required to distort the cue ball path and...

Radial Tap issue (new to repairs)

All good advice. Check your tailstock offset alignment. Get a set of pin gauges for measuring hole diameters. They will be helpful for sneaking up on your target bore. Lubricate the hole before tapping. You can use BLO or wax to reduce tearing. Run a test with a loose phenolic insert. The...
