    Scruggs joint identification

Well, we don't know that you got called an asshole by a known seller on here. You made a deal on Ebay, not here. You made a big mistake by not checking here with some good pictures, to see whether it was the real deal. If you got called an asshole, it's not on this thread. A few of us did...

    Scruggs joint identification

Many moons ago, and Doc, if it was a Scruggs sneaky, it was likely made by John Slovatnik, not Tim. Pay attention to the history.

Good luck. If you're stuck with the cue, I would have someone finish the TS off the butt plate, as you have a forgery.

About $1,050 too much, if that's what he took. Next time, post some good pictures on here, and we'll tell you whether it looks legitimate or not.

    Scruggs joint identification

Well, a bill of sale from Tim Scruggs with the exact description of the cue would be great. However, there are so many things wrong. First, when he used a 3/8 thread pin, it normally had the rounded bullet tip to it. This cue doesn't. Also, most TS logos have the little tick marks on both...

    Scruggs joint identification

Doesn't look like a Scruggs to me. Tim did a logo on the butt plate. Is it there? If it is, I'm Willie Mosconi.

    Refinish effect on cue value.

Yep. Years ago, a guy who worked at my local pool room had acquired a good old Joss, plain four pointer, with the wide white veneer, nice age, no problems with it, very nice patina, ivory joint, with Cortland linen. I shot a bit with it, didn't give him an offer, but probably should have. He...

    Refinish effect on cue value.

Generally agree, however we both have a mutual friend with a fancy Gus Szamboti that was in need of a restoration. It was done expertly by Barry, which I guarantee only enhanced the value. It does vary to restore a cue.

there are only two kinds of cues to own.

Reported. Queens can be players too.

Would you shoot a game of 9 ball against a guy who bridged like this?

Luther could run many racks right handed with a normal bridge, one-pocket, and very high runs in straight pool. He was the Mike Sigel of his time.

    Mike Erwin Cue Value

Assuming the same Clausing lathe was used to both turn down the buttsleeve and buttcap, as well as drill out the bottom for the bumper, I think it would be pretty difficult to make a bumper or weight bolt off-center. I recall a very nice Joss West Hoppe style cue years ago pictured, where guys...

    R.I.P. Dick Abbott

I'll miss Dick's collectible cue site as well as him showing up at an occasional tournament with cues for sale. I have a nice Scruggs Titlist conversion from Dick. Very nice guy, knowledgeable too.

I doubt that the bumper is off-center. Pictures are very misleading when taken at a slight angle. When done so, inlays often look off-center, and so can a bumper or weight bolt. Agree with you on more recessing, though that can be done with just sanding some off the bottom of the bumper as...

    American or Import Cue??? ID???

It speaks Asian import to me, but somewhat nicely made.

    Back in the old days.

Yeah, I may have been a few years off. My dad was born in 1921, so his memory would have been more in the 30s.

    Back in the old days.

Funny you mention that. My grandfather on my dad's side was a family doctor. So, there is a doctor in the family. Anyway, it was in Kansas during the depression in the 1920s. My dad had plenty of recollection of him accepting payment in the form of maybe a duck, a goose, a basket of...

    Buddy Hall - RIP

RIP, Buddy. I miss him playing in the U.S. Open nine ball in Norfolk. You could bet that he would be in the top 5.

Zen and the Art of Cue Maintenance

Great post. I would also add: Avoid sandpaper like the plague on the shaft, unless you want to reduce the diameter of the shaft. Sandpaper to finish the sides of the tip is fine, properly guarding the ferrule. Don't go for blades, knives, and swords to do a tip. I've spoken about this...
