    History of Joint Protectors?

Some ivory is more prone to cracking than other ivory. It's trial and error. In my experience, if the ivory had not sat around for a long time, it might crack on a joint or ferrule. If the cue had a piloted ivory joint, or countersunk ivory joint, it might crack. If the ivory had sat around...

    History of Joint Protectors?

I probably have the first joint protector in the history of pool cues. Well at least modern pool cues. My first Joss I bought in 1976 and the ivory joint suffered a crack fairly early on. That sometimes happened. Tim Scruggs was working at Joss at the time, and not only did he replace the...

Historic Cues. Do you have any?

Thanks Doc, and nice wedge style cue you posted. I don't bump old threads I started, but glad you continue to show interest in this one. My one suggestion to anyone who wants to show some historic cues, is don't use third party photo apps such as Photobucket, Imgur, or any of the others. They...

why do some non-factory / 3rd party shafts fit so tightly on the joint pin

Yep, there is other variation as well. Having handled more than one Joss West cue, his 5/l6 X 14 thread would get tighter as it got closer to the butt joint. I assume either his pin got larger as it got down, or possibly the brass insert was tighter the farther down. I suspect the former, not...

why do some non-factory / 3rd party shafts fit so tightly on the joint pin

I've always found the term "wood to wood" to be a bit of a misnomer, as the only cues I'm aware of that are truly wood to wood are carom cues where the pin is wood, part of the shaft, and it screws into wood threads in the joint section of the butt. For the Acme pin, it is 3/8 X 10 metal...

Those foggy spots just look like normal glare to me. I'd be surprised if they are finish problems.

why do some non-factory / 3rd party shafts fit so tightly on the joint pin

Having watched Mike Cochran use a tap to loosen up the inside of an Acme shaft of mine more than once, I would go with the standard. If it helps, Mike simply held the shaft in his left hand and ran the tap inside the shaft with his right hand a couple times, wiggling it a bit as necessary. But...

why do some non-factory / 3rd party shafts fit so tightly on the joint pin

Because joint pins aren't standard, even with a standard. 3/8 by 10, my first Joss has a bigger pin than my second Joss, both 3/8 by 10. 5/16 by 14, my Richard Black is bigger than all my Scruggs cues with the same pin. I understand the Schon 5/16 by 14 is different also. Sometimes it takes...

Is this a Balner or maybe a Paradise?

That would generally leave out Paradise and early Palmers, as they were 18 thread. Interesting cue.

Is this a Balner or maybe a Paradise?

Too early for Palmer. The shaft tenon does not resemble those by Palmer. The early Palmer weight bolts were usually more recessed than this one. The shaft tenon does resemble those by Frank Paradise. Most of Frank's had more recessed weight bolts, but not all. What is the thread size in the...

Joss- 1968-1979- Post your Pictures Please!!!

That's a nostalgic pool year for me. Freshman Fall year of college, and my roommate was into pool. So, I started playing too. First cue bought was a Palmer that Christmas, and then a Joss in 1976. Something like 20 cues later, one thing is obvious. I acquire more than I get rid of.

That would be a pretty rare business card. Believe that was their first Baltimore shop before they moved to Mylander Lane. Over time, they had two addresses on Mylander Lane. The date sounds correct, as Bill Stroud would have gone west by then.

    Gus Szamboti cues picture thread...

Rare find, as I think most of Gus's were piloted joints, even with ivory. Nice cue! All the best, WW

    Campion or Crown?

Yep, that's why I said more than likely. There are actually at least a couple other commercial tips that had the red pad. The Tweeten-made Triumph has a red pad, but it doesn't resemble the OP's tip as the Triumph had a much lighter tip area, and the cutouts on the fiber pad were much smaller...

    Campion or Crown?

More than likely an old Champion, with the red fiber base. A crown either had a black base in the old days, and no base in the later ones.

If it has a 5/16 X 18 pin, that will put it more in the early 70s, you are correct.

Joss- 1968-1979- Post your Pictures Please!!!

Very nice. The Hoppe style on the left, I would place in 1978 or so. The one on the right with dots in the buttsleeve, much earlier, as that was their joint collar pattern in the late 60s to about 1970 or so. Close?

Jayson Shaw’s 832 World Record is Official

Neither did Babe Cranfield, who had the previous record, 768. The Babe got to running around the table. 3 minutes would have been slow for him.

That was because beating Mosconi's run was upsetting to some. The billiards world is now getting used to records being broken.

    Sterling Silver Joint Collar?

Agree. Even a new ivory ferrule, I make it look better over time. I rub a bit of a wet finger on it and polish it with a cloth. After a while, it looks like it has a plate of glass over it. Yeah, it's that good to lavish love on cue parts.
