Pro taper vs conical taper on deflection?

11.75 mm with a long, pro-taper, is more like a fishing pole that a pool cue.

    My Southwest is here......finally.

Very nice. I don't have any ebony forearm cues, but I've always thought about them. This is a great example.

    Burnishing tip

Just go up with a wet thumb on the outside of the tip. Then close a paper towel or napkin around it and turn in one direction with some pressure. That's all you have to do. There's no need for a tool to do it, and I've heard more than once that it can take the tip off. Simpler is usually better.

Is there anyone that can authenticate a Joss West these days?

The early steel jointed Joss cues were done with the 18 thread pin. About the best player I knew who played with it was Billy Stephen, from Richmond. More of them were done with 14 thread afterwards.

World Pool Championship 1960s Legendary Pool Hustlers

I seriously doubt that clip was ever broadcast by ABC again, as they had weekly events to do. The one I'd like to see on tape is Luther Lassiter vs Eddie Taylor in straight pool, which was broadcast by ABC in something like 1966. Drop pockets, I think it may have been in Vegas. Great match...

Is there anyone that can authenticate a Joss West these days?

That makes sense, as there was some variation. As I recall the diamond series started in 1981, and didn't last long. By 1984 they'd gone to another series, slightly rounded points, no more delrin buttplate, and a few other differences.

Is there anyone that can authenticate a Joss West these days?

The Joss Diamond series was made with 5/16 X 14 thread, not 5/16 X 18. It's possible the pin could have been replaced, by that's not typical.

Is there anyone that can authenticate a Joss West these days?

Only in the very early days with Joss, not Josswest.

Though not every, most Tads had a longer butt plate than the standard 1.5 inches as this appears to be. Also most Tads had a difference box joint collar pattern. Bill, of Josswest did a dash style pattern in the joint collars, but these appear too centered to be one of Bill's. He did the...

Good post, I wonder how these work, as I've only played leather tips. Now I remember the brand I was thinking about for a synthetic tip. Believe it was from the 90s, and it was called Future tip. I can only imagine that it didn't last long, but would be interesting to see.

Boxed Set of Brunswick Balke Collender Ivory Balls

Beware of faux ivory. Mainly made in Asia. They're meant to look like ivory with the grain, but there are always flaws. Also, they tend have a heavy plasticized finish, which ivory balls don't. I can't think of how many times someone has tried to make the case for ivory here.

A few decades ago, I read some advertisements on synthetic tips. I forget the brand names, but have never tried them. To me, leather is still the best option, because you can have it a bit soft if that's your preference, or you can press it good, and have it very hard. Also, if it glazes and...

Here's something that may be a bit odd, but I have had the original Champion tips in the grey box since the 1970s, and never once have I had to cut the red fiber pad off before gluing it on or gluing on another pad. My guess is the original guy who did these tips did them better than some later...

If the majority are cutting them down, you might just prefer Talisman tips. In my experience, they do start out a bit less tall, and there is a pre-domed option on them. And, a very good tip.

I would guess the answer is that not all of us cut them down in the first place. If I use a layered tip, I wear it down; I don't cut it down. Ever since Moori came out with a layered tip, they and others have been fairly thick, to give the player what they want. I still say, let it wear down...

Well, I would guess says Tweeten, as their most desirable tips are the 15mm variety. Triangle for sure, and I believe LePro also. From experience, 13mm tips of any variety, tend to be very soft, useless.

Yeah, I didn't say they were good, just that there were some back then. I don't think anything will take the place of leather, unless someone comes up with something really brilliant. All the best, WW

Because the thicker hide, the back, is the only part of the animal that can accommodate both thicker and wider. Otherwise, you're looking at thinner, softer parts of the animal, which do not make as good tips.

Back in the 80s and 90s, there were some synthetic tips. May have been vegan, hard to tell.

You've missed the point with the 14mm tips, and for that matter, the 15mm. They come from the thicker hide of the animal, which is better suited for stability and wear-in. The best Triangle tips I've had are the 15mm variety.
