    Schrager joint

The first picture is a standard 3/8 10 screw that Harvey Martin Bert Schrager used in their cues. The second picture is a modified 3/8 10 screw that various other cue makers used on their cues. Jerry Franklin of SouthWest cues used a modified 3/8 11 screw in all of his cues. I will try to find...

    Pool Ball Weights

Thank you for confirming my suspicion, it's amazing to me that two cue balls with the same diameter and weigh would play so differently.

    Detachable Bridge

I might have been one of the guys. It was in the 70's a decent road player was told he could play anyone at Mr Pockets except Brian. The player asks, "How can I tell who is Brian?". He was told, "He's the Asian guy that plays with a hat turned backwards". When the player got to room he said...

Best hitting cue you ever played with.

I own a lot of cues and I have played with most of them. I did not play with a few high end cues because I felt they might become collector's items. They all hit differently, I like the way a few of them hit and hated the way others hit. I have been asked a bunch of times about “What cue should...

    Schrager joint

Bert Schrager played three cushion billiards at Tiff Payne's room in North Hollywood. The cue everyone used at the time was a Martin which is stiffer than a pool cue and used a large metal screw between the butt and the shaft. I have a cue with that type of joint and I will find the cue and...

    Detachable Bridge

The pool room with the most action in Los Angeles in the late 1960's to the early 1970's was Mr Pockets on 6th Street one block West of Western Avenue. It was a great room, there was enough space between the 14 tables that you did not have to wait for the player on the next table to finish...

    Pool Ball Weights

I stopped playing pool 25 years ago and I was shocked to see the various cue balls weigh the same. In the 1970's the Blue Circle cue balls played better than all the other cue balls. After a Blue Circle hit the object ball the Blue Circle acted like it was heavier because the Blue Circle would...

Is Cypress a good choice for butt components??

I've spoken with a couple of excellent cue makers and they all said hardwood is the best material for making a cue. I like what Chuck Truesdale, a maple supplier in the early 1990s said about supplying maple to cue makers. "If there is a better wood than Hard Maple for cues, everyone would be...

Does playing pool make you smarter?

I can't say pool made me smarter but pool allowed me to develop skills that have helped me all of my life. The work habits I used to learn to play pool also helped me succeed at my jobs and relationships.

Gus Szamboti Pool Cue with U.S. Fish Game Department Evidence Tag

This cue was taken by the U.S. Fish and Game Department when I left the cue with Ernie to be refinished. The cue was returned to me because they said it didn't have ivory in it. I decided to not refinish the cue because the cue now has a unique history. With this cue's documented history I am...

What do you think the best shotmakers have in common?

Great shot makers don't always play the best position because they do not have to. If their position isn't perfect they will run out anyway. Position becomes important later in your career when you can no longer make everything you shoot at.
