    truing a 6 wing cutter

Ernie O once told me he sharpens and trues his own with a diamond grinding wheel.

    Shaft cutting problems

Since this is a topic that interests me, here's another question: Has anyone tried setting up Constant Surface Speed Control (G96) on their CNC lathe? I don't have CNC control of my RPM's to try it myself, but I'm soon moving to that capability. Just wondering Gary

    Shaft cutting problems

Kim, That was exactly the problem I had with mine. So, instead of a little slice of wood being taken out with every passing of a cutter, you only get one or two cuts - well, one cut from the longest cutter - and hence the hammering that I experienced. I WAS able to find a happy, harmonic...

    Shaft cutting problems

IMHO every machine is different and every machine has a different sweet spot - or set of them - which must be explored by the operator. I used to use 6-wing cutters, but felt like they hammered the shaft and induced oscillations/barber-poling too easily. I believe Joey has found a place to send...

    The Finishing Conundrum

Ummm . . how does "odorless" mitigate any health issues? Does "odorless" similarly affect adhesion? Why not? Just sayin'

    Need Motor for Porper B

In a FB Forum, a guy posted this picture of an industrial sewing machine moter, that he built a mount for and installed it on his Porper. The industrial sewing machine motors are very strong (550W) and have a LOT of torque. Maybe you could do something similar...

Why have you had so many screen names? Some on here have done it to try to hide past bad behavior. Just wondering

    Cue shop for sale

Joe, Herb (WeeGee) is entitled to word his for sale post any way that he pleases. He has been a contributor here for 9+ years. You, not even 9 months. WeeGee, sorry to hear of your circumstances, but I'm confident you'll find a buyer. Hang in there, Gary

Keeping tool length offset when changing tools

I use Centroid on my machine. We have the option to replace the standard M6 tool change with a customized macro that pauses the program, prompts me to install tool x, then asks me if I want to reset the reference point or continue. If I choose reset, it then does a tool touch off subroutine...

    Shaft cutting problems

As others have requested, we need to see pictures of your setup in order to help diagnose your problem. Please post pictures of your lathe with a dowel mounted in it. Then a close-up of the headsrock, cross-slide with cutter, and the realistic. Finally, rig up a mount to hold a dial indicator...

    Bob Cad question?

Thinking It's not the computer that is 32-bit, it is the operating system Windows. Sort of like putting ethyl or regular gas in your car.

it just never occurred to me that I might one day need to get something different...

You are correct that cue suppliers, for the most part, simply repackage a commercially available product. So you might be able to take your nearly empty bottle to a woodworking store and ask if they can match it based on smell and feel. My 2 cents, Gary

Ferrule question, what am I doing wrong?

Turning too slow and feeding too fast , and taking too big a cut could cause that. My 2 cents, Gary

    Pad under tip

Chris and all, IMHO much of the hoopla over tip pads is cosmetic and not functional. We see these pads in clear and all colors of the rainbow. They, are cut from acrylic, polycarbonate, and other unspecified plastics. One proponent even claims his special brand of pad reduces deflection...

    Can Carbon Fiber Shafts Warp

I'm not following your train of thought. How does a manufacturing flaw - not being straight - increase the tendency of that bend to increase over time? Thanks

Yep, those are nicer - but depending on his background/level of experience, someone may have to teach him how to read it.
