Keith Where did you hear that? There is nothing especially more hazardous about purple heart than maple or many other woods used in cuemaking. However,some of the oily hardwoods like cocobolo can cause distress for some people. You have to avoid breathing the dust of all woods. Gary

If it came from the factory with a pad, the factory thinks it needs to be on there - or at least that it helps prevent splitting of the shaft. Leave it on. My 2 cents, Gary

I use 401 exclusively for tips. It's more expensive,but it works consistently.

I would suggest you search here and in the Cue Machinery forum for "lathe". This question gets asked in both forums 2-3 times per week. You'll get a lot more information that way. Good luck

I agree with Dave -this "huge opportunity" that you anticipate, may be an opportunity to fail. Simply purchasing a lathe doesn't make you a cue tech ready to work on other people's cues. In addition to a suitable lathe there are $$$ worth of tools, cutters, collets, ferrules, sealers, waxes...

Ron, Yes this can be done, I have done it too, but as Dave and Todd point out,experience and the right tools are needed. You should also post a picture of the phenolic ferrule/tip you want to use. Gary
