Going to Australia, any interesting wood I can bring home?

There are lots of unique indigenous species. No Rosewoods in Australia though. But you can find some amazing woods and burls. How readily available they are when you're on a visit I can't comment on.

Refinishing stained cue. Risk of sanding removing the stain?

Refinishing stained cues is tricky and it doesn't take much sanding to remove the stain. How deep the stain penetrates depends on the product used and how thin it is, but you will have to deal with restaining the cue for sure and it's always hard to predict how successful the end result will be...

Do carbon fiber cue shafts make custom cues obsolete?

The whole point is the reverse of the instant gratification. You get to see your cue being built and your ideas come to life in a physical object. I'm gonna go as far as saying that will never go out of style.

    Bees wax

That's true, but if you have a small tube of silicone and apply some to the weightbolt, I seriously doubt you'll have any issues. I spray clear all the time and I've never had an issue due to silicone.

Do carbon fiber cue shafts make custom cues obsolete?

About 60% of my customers still buy wood shafts with their cue. I see sports like tennis and golf mentioned in the same breath as pool. I would say the advantages of composite materials in those sports are much bigger than in pool.

Do carbon fiber cue shafts make custom cues obsolete?

Does the fact that you can buy carbon fibre guitars, violins and drums make wood instruments obsolete?

    Bees wax

A small dab of silicone will make sure the bolt doesn't move and if you want to remove it, a quick half turn twist will break the bond.

    Rotary tool in tool post

I know you can buy holders that fit Makita and others that use the same dimensions.

    Rotary tool in tool post

Dremel tools aren't particularly accurate or strong. Makita has a palm router that's pretty compact, DeWalt and Milwaukee has their own variants. Personally I use a Kress/AMB FME1050P, the big advantage, other than the accuracy is that it uses standard ER16 collets

    Cue cut install

It's been a while since I installed Kelly's programs, but I'm pretty sure you should have gotten an email from him with your licence. For Cuecut and Cuebillet, those where downloadable, but will only work with the dongle. The obvious solution is to try to send Kelly a new mail or even call him...

    Isoplast color....

I told you Hydex was better as I have changed ferrules on a lot of shafts, especially Predator shafts and I have seen Isoplast crack, but not Hydex, that's why I don't believe they are the same and that's also the context I feel Hydex is a better material. I don't think I'm being vague, it's...

    Isoplast color....

You have two measurements listed, I would say they are pretty close. I don't know how you build your cues, but if you look at the weigh of Juma Elforyn, Hydex, Tomahawk and T34 in a 1/2" piece of ferrule, we are really splitting hairs in terms of it's effect on deflection, so I think the...

    Isoplast color....

I've used Juma for years and I have never had any issues. I think Mr. Dzuricky has a chart on his website where he compares the most popular ferrule materials.

Getting my first Custom pool cue made questions

First off, what's your budget. That's often a good place to start. Then note the things you prefer, like weight, balance and if you have certain woods or colours in mind. A combination of your input and trusting the cue makers skill and experience results in a good outcome.

Is it easier/is it possible to re-thread a shaft, or is it easier to replace a joint pin in a butt?

I tend to recommend replacing the threads in the shaft, as it's a much easier job and less risk. But if the cue has some sort of bastard pin, you're definently better off just swapping the pin to a more standard pin.
