    a good stroke

Slow acceleration I am with you on this one. I have found that this really helps my stroke and have also noticed it as a characteristic of good looking strokes in others. I am not sure why it should be the case, but I was struck by a sentence in a 2002 paper by by Mark Williams and others on...

    Snooker Players

I think that you have summed it up pretty well, Hu. I doubt that there is any real difference between the talents of the pro snooker and pool players. But they have developed slightly different skill sets, each optimised for their own games. I also agree that good pool players would be able...

    Ranked Players ???

Previous threads Here are a couple of earlier threads on this: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=99234 http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=108537 You can probably find others (but it is not a particularly easy thing to search for).

Shaft taper for open bridge and closed bridge

I can see your logic here, but it doesn't work quite that way for me. I played snooker for 10 years or so and in common with virtually all other snooker players, used an open bridge and a European taper. It was only when I took up pool again and started using a closed bridge more that I found...

    Fred/Joe Davis Vs Mosconi.........

Fantasy billiards This rings a bell with me. I think that this was of the early attempts by snooker's governing body to push the game in the US. (Largely a failure, as were later attempts made in the 80's - including giving professional membership to Jim Rempe and the Miz) Getting back to...

    Running out of steam...

This happens to me a lot, and I think it is my body trying to tell me something. Probably something like this: "Oi Grandpa - why don't you go to bed, you old git. You're playing rubbish and you're not going to get any better. In fact, you never could play any good. Why don't you just give up...

    practice and boredom

practice & play Scott, I have no doubt that you are right on this. The way of practising that you have suggested is the best. If the player can motivate himself to do it. Regarding my routine, let me explain: The practice bit is what you do IN BETWEEN racks of playing the ghost. What you...

    practice and boredom

Practice and Boredom I hear you! My boredom threshold is far too low for drills even though I know that these are the most effective method of practice. The way I figure it, the beneficial value of a drill is zero if I don't do it. The best practice I have come up with is a version of...

How Do You Grip Your Cue?

back hand control so important #1 for me. I have found that this, together with the positions of all the other fingers and how these change during the stroke, is a very important part of my game. Can have a big effect on both consistently hitting the ball well and on delivering the cue...

Why would it be easier to draw with one cue over the other?

Paradigm regained (somewhat predictably!) Yes it is interesting. Any two people arguing can take up entrenched positions. But I suppose that when one is a scientist by inclination and the other as you put it a 'perceiver', you can probably abandon all hope of useful dialog because they will...

Why would it be easier to draw with one cue over the other?

Paradigm lost Explained very well. I am probably being a bit slow, but what I wasn't sure about was what the paradigm is in the context of this thread. :o

    Back arm perpendicular- why?

I wouldn't worry at all about cueing a little forward of perpendicular. It is behind perpendicular that is a real no-no IMO

Why would it be easier to draw with one cue over the other?

strange analogy indeed Well, I am not sure what all that was about, but apart from the bit about the guy injecting his nob in public, I enjoyed it.

Why would it be easier to draw with one cue over the other?

Still calling for Dr Dave! Good post, Jim - interesting. I particularly liked your 'strange units' (sounds like something to measure a quark in!) However I do have some issues with your analysis. As I said earlier, my problem lies around the impact and what is happening during that time. I...

Why would it be easier to draw with one cue over the other?

Too many words Yes I was aware that my post was running on a bit! Apologies for that. :o Let me precis: I think that the claim that the spin speed ratio depends only on the distance of the hit from the center is wrong; that it is based on overly simplistic physics and (crucially) it does...

Why would it be easier to draw with one cue over the other?

Calling Dr Dave! Patrick, I have now got round to looking at this again. Having thought about it, I have concluded that my doubts definitely do center around what is actually happening at the moment of impact. We know that a good player can do things with the c.b. that a ?banger? cannot...

    Following balls in.

No draw needed I do not believe that you need draw on the cue ball if the two object balls are not too close together (although of course if it works for you, then fine). All that is needed is to make sure that you don't hit too hard, and concentrate on hitting the second ball absolutely full.
