My humble opinion is this; if you lose in a race to 9 or 11, it's NOT because the other guy has a jump cue. Make less mistakes than the other guy and you will win more often than not.

I agree that a good protective case is 100000000% more important than owning a pair of joint protectors. As for being necessary, I agree with you as well. I view them similar to door locks and seat belts; not necessary strictly speaking, but if anything does happen, you would be glad you had them.

I have not seen it being used much to ridicule someone wanting to spend a lot of money on a cue. I mostly see it as people using it to mock posts asking what the best cue is or when people suggest expensive custom cues in response.

A decent pair of JP costs anywhere from $10-20. Are you guys really that strapped for cash that you can't buy something that can help further protect your cues?
