We deploy several 'Damp Rid' bags around the basement and dump them almost weekly. Surprising how much water accumulates. Not sure that they are more effective than a dehumidifier, but they work 24/7.

I think people in Louisiana don't fear Vampires and Voodoo, since both are so common. ;)
