Diamond Pro-Am or Rasson Victory II

I thought I was pretty explicit but I'll say it again. It has ball-return. It's the only Diamond that has it and no Rasson has it. As well, it's the table most commonly found in the tournaments I play in and the tournaments I wish to play in. I agree. It's not very appealing aesthetically...

Questions about switching to carbon fiber

I would hesitate condemning the tip too. More often than not, miscues happen because you put a bad stroke on the ball. I mean, of course lack of chalking, bad chalk, bad tips, and tips in bad shape can lead to miscues but I think it's safe to assume the shaft came with a quality tip in new...

    Pool Movie Writing Thread

One idea that I really enjoyed was John Painz' "8 for Vegas" which is a mockumentary about an APA pool team. In general, I think there are a lot of ways you can go that would be entertaining but there is no substitute for great talent in writing and directing. In Painz' series, he's obviously...

Questions about switching to carbon fiber

I agree with this sentiment. Everyone's game varies, even when you're playing a lot every day. If you're just getting back into it and/or you're not playing a lot, you're going to see a lot of variance. Switching cues is only going to increase the variance. The last time I switched shafts...

Diamond Pro-Am or Rasson Victory II

I've played on both but I've never been involved with any transactions with Rasson before, so it's difficult for me to do a true apples-to-apples comparison. Diamond is a *great* company to work with. I've helped a poolroom purchase a fleet of them and I've helped friends purchase them for...

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

Yeah, the weekly tournaments have always had a lot of shortstops. I'd say the average is six out of the 20 or so that frequent the room, and it could be anyone from that 20.

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

It's sorta been a combination of COVID and my recent engagement. I've been busy and avoiding public spaces. I just got my first shot last week and that's also when I started going to the poolroom again on a more regular basis. I was there for the Skinny Bob's Open though, is that the...

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

Sorry, I meant the royal "you". Not YOU. :)

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

While that's true, officially, the declaration expires after the shot. You have to declare it before each shot so that the shooter is aware. I mean, there is a reasonable chance in a game like 8ball, someone can say after the break that the 13 ball is frozen. The shooter buzzes around the...

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

I don't think it's a whole bag. I think there is one type of safety that would be easier to execute, specifically the kick-safe (often played in 1p and 8ball). The rest of the safeties are happening either way. EDIT: I'll add the kiss-back safety too. That one would certainly be in play now.

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

QQ - if a ball is declared frozen and then the shooter decides to shoot something else AND THEN shoot at the frozen ball, doesn't another hit rail, and then says his opponent didn't declare it, who is the asshole?

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

I have a similar story like yours. I was playing an APA match in a bar and had gotten near straight and a foot away on the match winning 8-ball. My opponent jumps out of his chair and proceeds to examine the 8-ball. I asked, "What are you doing?" He said, "I'm checking to see if it's...

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

I mean, to an extent, nearly all rulings are simple tasks but the role of a referee doesn't end with just declaring it frozen. The rule also has protocol, which isn't always followed. A very common scenario is to declare a ball frozen. The ball ends up not moving. A few innings later, the...

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

The fact that it "seldom leads to a foul" is a good chunk of my argument. Regarding "only takes a couple of seconds", I beg to differ. As a league operator and referee, I can tell you about countless times I've been called to making a ruling on frozenness. In addition, many players are...

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

I'm a BCAPL league operator and have been running leagues (8ball, 9ball, and 14.1) for years, in addition to many tournaments of all calibers. I also actively compete in my locality and state. Perhaps that's why this is a bigger issue for me. I see the arguments a bit more often.

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

You could have a ball frozen to the rail and the cue ball in the jaws of the pocket (behind the rail) and be able to make contact without driving into the rail. I think that's what Bob is trying to prevent in his wording.

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

Well, I never said "it doesn't affect me". At least, if I used those exact words, I didn't mean it. What I meant was, it never results in a foul. It "affects me" by unnecessary delays and arguments.

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

I'm glad you see my point and you're right, those are really the only kinds of safeties that you'll commonly see thwarted by a ball being declared frozen. I mean, there are plenty of other scenarios but truthfully, when I look back on the 30 years I've been playing pool, I can't think of more...

Object Ball Frozen to Rail Rule

Your logic reminds me a lot about baseball rules. I'm a big baseball fan so you'll have to forgive me. 9 players, 9 innings, 27 outs. Baseball clearly went out of their way to be extremely democratic. Every player has an equal chance to be a hero. I mean, these rules have obviously changed...
