    Why not Pinegar?

Yes. An example is Charlie Williams (no games in a decade) or Dennis Hatch (no games in 4 years). Their ratings are still 778 and 762. You can look them up. But you won't find them on any "top player" lists. Those lists have a modest "currently active" requirement of 150 games in last two years.

    My Fargorate progression

I think you're overstating the case a bit, John. Yes, he is 502 now and he was 523 a year ago. In that time, though, he played in 2022 and 2023 summer league divisions, winter league division, Fall (9-Ball) Western BCA team event Fall (9-Ball Western BCA Singles event Spring (8-Ball)...

Suggestion for Fargo capped events: make the cap random each event

We don't have much information in Germany. But if you look at the Oslo Open in Norway, a handicapped event from a few years ago, you will find Souquet, Gorst, He, Feijen, Wiktor Zielinski, Casper M, Pijus L, Damianos, Imran Majid, Mark Gray, etc. There are other ones like this like the...

    Why not Pinegar?

and a win over Konrad Juzczyszyn in the same event a year ago and wins over Mieszko Fortunski, Ruslan Chinahkov and Thorsten Hohmann in 2021 and a win over Sanjin Pehlivanovic at Texas Open 2022 and a win over David Alcaide at 2022 World 9-Ball and a win over Oliver Szolnoki at US Open 10-Ball...

Suggestion for Fargo capped events: make the cap random each event

Where does the idea the US has more handicapped events come from? Many and maybe even most of the top European players have games from handicapped events in their records. That is rare for top US players.

    How 'bout them Filipinos!

How many world-class players can an island country of a hundred million produce? Apparently, a lot. Visionary efforts of Sharks Billiard League are beginning to make that clear as they've hosted the first international pool event in the Phiippines in a decade, There now are 31 Filipino players...

    My Fargorate progression

We don't have accurate trending data. We rarely even have approximate trending data with any confidence. When you see a rating change in time, don't think the person's skill is changing in time. Rather think the person's skill is probably staying the same but we don't know what it is. The...

    My Fargorate progression

I agree we can conjure up situations where people have the opportunity to be on the stall and then have an outsized chance of a big payday. We see the excitement that surrounds these jumbo entry fee events but also have concerns about the perverse incentives they create. As you probably saw, we...

    Dennis Orcollo v Fedor Gorst (9 Ball/ Race to 90) July 30-August 1

Let me put some context on that. Fedor has been winning 60% of the games. From the "rule of 60," that means their results are those expected of two players 60 points apart. So these would be results seen as typical if the world's top player faced the 100th best player (also about a 60 point...

Sharks International 9 Ball Open (24-29 July), Philippines, Prize Fund $100K

As usual more information makes the ratings better. Cocoy (Oliver) Villafuerte has 15 matches in his record against top-100-list opponents (I believe all played in PHI) Any guesses of how many of the 15 matches he won? [...]

What is the FargoRate "rule of 60?"

    My Fargorate progression

Yes, though we would not call it a preliminary "Fargo" rating because it has a part that has nothing to do with FargoRate. The "preliminary rating," the number with a P after it, is a blend of the not-yet-established-Fargo-performance rating (the part that could reasonably be called a...

    My Fargorate progression

Sure. Let's say a player new to Fargorate is a well known APA 6 or B player in some area, and the people in the area know from experience this should not be too far from, I don't know, 530. And the player is assigned a starter guess of 530. Scenario 1: The first 40 games generate a performance...

    My Fargorate progression

The question was whether the new player has a "starter rating," and I replied he doesn't have one. Here is what that means. Generally FargoRate has no "start." A batting average has no "start,' right? A bowling average has no "start." If the first 9 games you play are against a 450 and you...

Can I question my Fargo rating?

I think this is more perception that reality. You have, as you know, a lot of games against Bobby D., rated 494. Your performance against players stronger than Bobby D (89 games) and your performance against players weaker that Bobby D (160 games) are the same within 2 points. The size of...

Can I question my Fargo rating?

The Eurotour is an extreme of this. One guy was ranked top 100 with a Fargo Rating in the 300s and having never gotten to 5 in a race to 9 after many many tournaments. Many others rated over 700 ranked higher than 100.

Can I question my Fargo rating?

I just looked at the four highest rated players from Platinum 8-Ball singles at BCAPL Vegas this year Oliver Ruuger (NY) 718 James Davee (WA) 715 Victor Cucuzza (UT) 713 Dylan Spohr (PA) 712 They all play in the vicinity of 715 and have tons of tournament games. But I just put all four...
