    Cross slide question/Taig/Hightower Mid size

Received and installed a new dial assembly and cross slide nut today and the lathe works as good as new! Problem has been resolved. Everyone's input and patience while helping me is truly appreciated.

    Cross slide question/Taig/Hightower Mid size

Hey Tommy D, it looks like it was dropped and the handle is bent and there is some wobble as a result. I'd prefer to replace the carriage and cross slide since the lathe is 8 years old. Good eye Tommy!

    Cross slide question/Taig/Hightower Mid size

Thank you for the resource Joe! I have a copy of that page taped to my bench. That's what prompted my question asking if a lead screw was the same as a cross slide screw.

    Cross slide question/Taig/Hightower Mid size

Joe, thank you for the clarification. The lead screw (is this the same as "cross slide screw"?) is not spinning when using Chris's instructions.

    Cross slide question/Taig/Hightower Mid size

Chris, when I followed your directions, as soon as the slide contacted the wedged in tool post and could no longer travel, the dial/handle continued to turn/slip. Also, when I created a little resistance going in the opposite direction, again, the slide stopped moving but the dial/handle...

    Cross slide question/Taig/Hightower Mid size

Neil, When I crank the handle without the resistance of trying to cut off a tip or face a ferrule, the cross slide travels as expected in both directions. So it appears the lead screw is engaged to the handle. But as soon as I try cutting off a tip or facing a ferrule, the slide stops halfway...

    Cross slide question/Taig/Hightower Mid size

I selected the wrong photo and have now corrected it. As for you sounding "harsh"...well just take a gander at the revised photo of the shaft I just reconditioned and installed a new tip! The second photo shows the actual position of my tool post and carriage slide when I experienced the problem.

    Cross slide question/Taig/Hightower Mid size

Neil, the tool post was located approximately 1 1/2 inches from the handle. The picture does not depict the location of the tool post. Sorry for the confusion. Any suggestions?

    Cross slide question/Taig/Hightower Mid size

After removing the cross slide for cleaning and oil, I was excited to pop a cutting bit on a tool post to remove an old tip and face the ferrule for a new tip. I moved the carriage into position and moved the cross slide in position to begin cutting away the old tip. As I turned the handle to...

    Oil for MidSize Lathe

The Taig manual says to use 10W motor oil for lubrication. So what is the best way to apply the oil to areas where friction is involved? Small oil can or wipe it on with a rag? Has anyone found a "better" oil product for lubricating this type of lathe from Chris Hightower?

New to me midsize lathe questions

It gets pretty hot here in the desert and it's usually very low humidity (2% to 30%). Glue doesn't last very long here so I keep mine in the house in a dark spot. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I have a tip pop off as well so it sounds like it might be a good idea to pick one up!
