Lowes or Home Depot Facing Material?

Here is a source for a variety of this material. It can be had in red, blue, or black, in 3/32 or 1/8 inch thickness. We use it to seal the cowling around aircraft engines so it holds up to extremes of heat and cold. I think that it would mimic the properties of the typical cushion. I am...

    Crash's Medalist

Yeah, I know what you mean ... the first day I don't think I played more than 6 racks. I sat and looked at it until 2:00 AM. Sadly, I ran out of beer and decided to go to bed.

    Crash's Medalist

Thanks Mr. Glen. I think I could'a done better but it was my first time using the pvc plumbing strap method. In two or three years I'll recover and tighten up the pockets. I know where to get the information to do that too! Roll Tide!

    Crash's Medalist

I've been posting and asking questions for a couple of months during the set up of my Medalist. Most of what I did you'll never see like leveling, nut plate slots filled, new cushions, etc.. And what you do see is not as good as what I've seen you guys do but it sure beats the other tables...

    Granite, Slate or Marble?

Slate used in billiard tables is mud and clay (shale) that has been altered by heat and pressure deep in the earth. These microscopic grains of mud and clay in slate are flat and parallel. This quality is not found in granite or marble where the grains are blocky. FYI ... If anyone cares...

    Granite, Slate or Marble?

I don't think the experts will mind me saying something here so I'll try ... Slate ... for two reasons - 1) it is quarried, cut, and machined easier than granite or marble for mass production thus lowering cost, and 2) it absorbs moisture, evident in the arguments about moisture content between...

Filling slate hold down screw holes

Damn, how far outside the cushion nose are the holes on this Olhausen to allow that? It looks like a mechanic tried to adjust the slate with the screw after the cloth was installed. Seriously, after I saw these I double-checked my cushions and measured the screw holes at 1/8 inch outside the...

    Slate mismatched

One Do-it-Yourselfer to another I learned to leave as much cloth as possible when I trim to have something to grab onto. Especially true with my old no-name table where the slates would change depending on the time of year/humidity. I suspect it was the high moisture content in the old...

    New cloth and tighter pockets

gerford - I had tightened the corner pockets to 4 7/8 and 137º on my old 8 foot table thinking it would improve my playing. Instead of improving my skills it killed my mental performance and I would walk away thinking I would never get any better. That attitude stuck with me away from home...

    Brunswick Tournament Decals

reverend - White. Attach some pics when you can. I'm surprised Brunswick doesn't sell them and they are not on Antique Billiards either. The Medalist plays well and looks good for the money. The tournament decal/logo would just put "icing on the cake". That and a better light!

    Level-Acceptable Limits

RKC - The approximate price is off of their web-site http://www.diamondbilliards.net/Accessories/Lighting/tabid/71/Default.aspx The Diamond lights have impressed me since I first saw them at a pool hall here in Huntsville (Shooters, all Diamond). I really want to replace the beer advertisement...

    Level-Acceptable Limits

You guys have saved my sanity. I've only set up tables 4 times in two years and this was the first using a Starret. Glad to see my limits were reasonable being subjected to the variation in ~15 year old slates. I enjoy doing this for myself and friends but I would go broke doing this for a...

    Level-Acceptable Limits

Clarification With the Starret on a 4-foot carpenters level it's on the mark in all dimensions and intervals. The ±.007 is seen when the Starret is placed directly on the covered table at various points.

    Level-Acceptable Limits

What limits do professionals allow for level. I understand there are no perfect slates so at some point there has to be a bit of variation from "perfectly level" that must be accepted. I went nuts over 2 nights chasing the bubble in an 8-inch Starret. It was worth it though ... the table plays...

    Nut Plate slots, fill 'em?

I didn't take pictures but I did fill mine with soft pine about 3/8 in deep in the slots. All the nut plates had good threads and had never been over torqued. In fact they were kinda loose when we broke it down. When I bolt the rails down, "good and snug" vs "spark plug tight" should do just...

Buying question - Can you get a good table for under $200 ?

Yes, it plays well for what it is ... an 8-foot four-legged claw-foot no-name 3-slate table made out of a plywood bath tub with two 2x6s holding the sides apart and the slates up. It was constant adjustments for 3 years. I'm sure there will be other opinions on this but plywood tubs on four...

Buying question - Can you get a good table for under $200 ?

I need to get my 8 ft no-name 3-slate table out of the way for another table. I used it to learn how to install cushions, set-up, level, and recover. I'm letting a guy in the office who lives two blocks away have it for $200 and I'm setting it up for him too. That way I will get some more...
