Wiktor missed a very easy shot early, pretty much a 3-4 foot shot on the 8-ball straight into the side pocket. Total mental lapse. It affected him for several turns at the table early on.

I have photos of the cue in my phone. No idea why. It must’ve been a mystery back then as well.

    5/16-18 joint mystery.

You already got your answer to this. The JPs were built with larger major and minor diameters than the Helmstetter. The female JP will fit, but the male JP won’t. This is the same idea with Schon vs Joss, which you said was well known. Maybe it’s not so well understood then. A Helmstetter...

    5/16-18 joint mystery.

That’s not why they adopted best practices. Outsourcing is mostly about cost of goods. The world was buying from Japan because the overall cost made sense. The world severely slowed down on Japanese imports in the 90’s, and a lot of Japanese manufacturing came to North America. I’ve...

    5/16-18 joint mystery.

Yes. Look up Edwards Deming, who introduced what ended influencing what would become the Toyota Production System organized lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and Just in Time manufacturing. It’s a methodology that has influenced all manufacturing, recognizing and reducing waste. But...

    5/16-18 joint mystery.

Drive screws and motion control. They (along with the carriage that rides on the screw) can provide very little backlash, which would be important for motion control. The trapezoidal profile can provide strength as well. Not all trapezoidal profiles are Acme. What makes this particular...

    5/16-18 joint mystery.

I was talking about a piloted nose on the joint thread not the pilot of the shaft insert into the butt. I think you’ve got confusion going on. The Schon is an undersized 5/16-14. That means the shaft thread is too small on the diameters vs the Joss and others. if Bill Stroud actually was...

    5/16-18 joint mystery.

A Schon 5/16-14 is undersized major and minor. So, a Schon shaft won’t fit on a Joss, Tascarella or any 5/16-14 that is “full-size.” I know you mentioned Acme. Anyone using an Acme thread for cue joint is nuts and I suspect have no idea what an Acme thread is. And no, Schon cues never...
