Many different theories on ways to assemble cues. If your belief lays in one of many and it's working for you don't change a thing. In the beginning I was shown a certain way to assemble cues and felt there were some better ways to accomplish those ideas. I tried a few different ways in my very...

Even blasting air full bore you'll probably create more heat with more chance of deteriorating the glue bond at the points using a gun drill IMO. Coring before the points are installed will allow the points, the core and the host wood to have a stronger bond. Maybe 6 to 1 and a half dozen to...

    Shaf Drop Bouncing

"Pinging" wood has been around for, well as long as I've known wood to be wood. After a shaft is complete with a tip installed it takes a back seat because too many variables have been introduced. (IMO) All of the sounds I'm looking for come before any woods are assembled or have cue building...

Installed DRO on my lathe, super happy.

Life without a DRO is like a peanut butter sandwich with no jelly. Like cue building with a shop full of balsa wood. Like eggs with no bacon. Like a car with no tires. Like a handgun with no bullets. Like......well you get the picture. ;)

    Where to get wood?

1.5 sq x 30 inch sounds like a piece wanted for a full splice or a MW style. Unless you know someone personally that has 2 pieces like you are looking for, your search may last a long time. Just a heads up..... Any wood store listed on the internet with 2 pieces as such would last all of about...

    Tulipwood - decisions, decisions

Brazilian Tulip is a rosewood. Generally referred to a Dalbergia (given 2 different Latin names, no idea why) Very few woods I trust that do not need cored. Unless your woods are older than dirt, I would stress relieve them with a core. IMO it's just sound insurance for the longevity of...

Tips being installed angled inward slightly on the outside diameter

Play it. You'll be fine. Some tip installers do this to help alleviate the mushroom effect. Just don't grind a chalk ring into the ferrule when you chalk the tip. 🤪

CA glue to seal the tip sidewalls

Forgive them, for they know not what they do.

Getting steady rest / 3 jaw bearing chuck aligned and centered

No matter what equipment you utilize I've always considered it 45% machine, 45% operator and 10% experimentation. Putting 2 different individuals on the best machine will more times than not end in 2 different results. I understand where you're coming from and the learning curve. I still learn...

Getting steady rest / 3 jaw bearing chuck aligned and centered

If you're serious about doing any cue work..... Get yourself a lathe with a large bore hole, a long bed and a DRO. You will grow tired of thanking yourself for doing this.

Getting steady rest / 3 jaw bearing chuck aligned and centered

Curious.....what would you use this set up for? Is it a cue building jig thingy? Why not just work out of the chuck on the lathe? I'm probably missing here

    Stainless Ferrule

Ever heard of this phrase? Friends don't let friends ________________. (fill in the blank) In this case the blank should read "do stupid stuff" ;)

What color of phenolic is this............??

Southwest had this color in some of their earlier cues. I'd call it a reddish brown. Back in the late 90's I was cruising a local plastics shop and found a piece in the scrap bin for cheap and snatched it up. Was only big enough diameter for joints. I've since looked for a match in a larger...

Cuemakers who do really dark brown shafts?

Certainly a misconception. There are many quality cue techs that should be able to do a ring swap that is at the finished size. I have done this many times in the past.

    Assembling A joint thoughts

One of the biggest mistakes made in assembly at the A is over tightening. Guaranteed it will likely show up as a negative down the road. I've had this discussion a few times with others that claim they assemble with the handle well over sized and just re-center the back end and crank the A as...

Thoughts on purpleheart insert for shaft threads?

I was suggesting for the pin not an insert.

Thoughts on purpleheart insert for shaft threads?

Once I get my numbers I've had the best results cutting them in one pass. I also have a cutter that matches my pin profile. I know the debate has raged about location on the minor diameter of the pin for mechanical purposes but it has worked very well for me for many years. I cut them snug on...

Thoughts on purpleheart insert for shaft threads?

Figure out how to cut threads as such and they will last longer than you ever will without the additional work of adding an insert for big pin cues. Happy 4th of July!
