What was the first time you realized you’re a strong player?

Depends if I was fighting Barney Fife or Mike Tyson. I once figured out I was about the 300th or so best Snooker player in the world. That was about age 26 or so. With 6 hours a day dedication I might have chopped that in half...’might’. An outside chance of making it and floundering in the...

Why don't Snooker players use low deflection shafts?

I doubt if CF shafts will gain any foothold. They have been around quite a few years. There were 142 players in the qualifying and Crucible rounds. 100% wooden cues. With a lot of money to win players certainly aren’t reluctant to find an edge over an opponent. The American Pool cue market is...

Why don't Snooker players use low deflection shafts?

I don’t question the tip to mass variable. However, most snooker players I know use their snooker cue when playing American pool. I do. O'Sullivan, Davis, White, Alex Higgins all competed ( and won) in the Mosconi Cup in the mid 90’s using their snooker cues. An aside on diameters listed...

    selby's career performance

Thanks for pointing this out. Interesting stat. My ‘guess’ is that earlier he was coming up against O'Sullivan, Higgins and Williams at their peak...and a few other players such as Ebdom, Fu and Doherty. And, understandably, he just didn’t have the experience. Many players seem to hover in...

Why don't Snooker players use low deflection shafts?

Many Snooker players will give you a blank stare when it comes to deflection. I never heard of it until I joined this site. There’s so many discussions on ‘aiming’ but most snooker players are puzzled how anyone can miss pocketing balls into 4.5 inch pockets on small American style tables...

    2021 World Snooker Championship

That’s like when he and Hendry were talking about playing 9 ball. Ronnie just shoots the next number ball. He doesn’t plan out any sequence. Having said this he claims Efren Reyes is the only Pool player that could have cracked into the to 32 Snooker rankings if he had dedicated himself to the...

    2021 World Snooker Championship

True. Selby is an all around talented player. Centuries need to be put in perspective. Some players like Williams and Jimmy White do trick shots once the game is out of reach. It’s similar with ‘147s’. A player like Selby or Williams go after middle table position early on ( blue ball) and...

    My Home Pool Room Journey

Enjoying the progress. Feels like ‘our’ journey. Reminds me when I built my own house back in 1980. After I finished, I almost wish I had another house to build because I then knew how to do it the right way. It turned out fine but...oh well, that’s how we learn. I’ll definitely get one of...

    2021 World Snooker Championship

Great tournament. Got Home from fishing and sat down with a pot of tea to watch the recorded final session...incredible talent. There’s such a depth of talent that any of the top 16 players winning is no longer an upset. Four different champions in the last four years. Three different runner...

What was the first time you realized you’re a strong player?

Ronnie OSullivsn had never played 9 ball before playing in the Mosconi Cup in the mid 90’s. He defeated 5time world champion Eric Strickland using a Snooker cue...as did his partner Steve Davis. Ronnie had to ask his partner about the rules between table visits. Re Jimmy White, he and Alex...

Fixing the game of 9 ball.

That’s something I observe but thought it was just Canada. Pool here is almost synonymous with 8 ball. On the AZ forum Pool seems to be almost synonymous with 9 ball. I play in 3 billiard leagues (pre Covid) and nobody ever mentions 9 ball. I also visit thr UK, France and Germany once a year...

    Memory, Playing Pool, and Aiming

Stephen Hendry, 7 time world Snooker champion, talks about this. He says the top players can visualize every ball on the table. He knows where every ball (not just object and cueball) will end up if a shot is executed perfectly. Equally important he knows where balls will end up ( risk...

    2021 World Snooker Championship

We have a natural tendency to root for underdogs. However, at the same time I want to see the four best players in the semi finals and then two gladiators in the final. Hoping for a Selby vs Trump/Robertson final going down to a deciding frame. Glad to see MCGill doing well but he’d lose by 10...

Looks inviting. Doubly so with that floor.

    A snooker situation - thoughts?

Ha! I’ve been playing Snooker 53 years since age 14 and never came across it...and if reincarnated will not come across it. Or perchance that if I ever do, will be scrolling back though AZ to find the solution I read in in a previous life a century earlier.

If you were not allowed to Gamble on Pool would you quit the game?

Played billiards for 53 years. Never gambled. I don’t gamble at all. I bought a couple of raffle tickets in my life for school or community causes. Billiards for me is sport and not a bar game. I also don’t gamble when playing hockey or soccer.

Fixing the game of 9 ball.

Agree. Thus why American Pool needs to foster an image as a ‘sport’ rather than a bar game to succeed at the pro level. There is another thread on who spends at a Pool Hall. Yup, praise for everyone who drinks alcohol and eats unhealthy greasy food. Each to their own but not conducive to...

    2021 World Snooker Championship

Re watching. I just watch the matches on YouTube after they are finished. Lots of fans start posting the match as each frame finishes. Every match in the big tournaments is available in a variety of forms...the whole Match in full time or short versions wih no pauses between shots. re Ronnie...

    2021 World Snooker Championship

Ronnie is always vulnerable early on. I picked Robertson the last 4 World’s. Zero for 4 so might as well go for an even 5. On the positive side there is such a depth of talent that anyone of a dozen players winning would not be a major upset. I have Robertson versus Bingham in the final.

    Rules of Thumb in Pool

Definitely number 6. I’ve played hockey and soccer for 60 years. Number one discussion is the strength and weaknesses of the opposition and adjust our game accordingly. All about risk/benefit, etc. I’d assume this is similar in American football. So many Pool ‘how to videos’ discuss ‘this is...
