How Reyes got so good in 3 cushion billiards...

Efren could never have qualified for the top 128 Snooker rankings. He ‘could have’ if it had been a goal earlier in his career. I’m actually glad he didn’t as we wouldn't have seen his magic on the Pool table. He’s the best player to ever pick up a Pool cue. Along with Ronnie OSullivan...

Interesting video in report. Last Canadian table manufacturer.

Nice to see the personal attachment to their product. https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/last-industrial-pool-table-manufacturer-in-canada-a-tale-of-adaptation-and-innovation-1.5723786

    Old timer/ history

True. I like reading Roman history. One of the strengths of the Roman Military was the discipline to March an army half way across Europe in a couple months without 80% of the troops deserting if not promised pillaging rights at the destination.

    Improving Defense - Safety Drills

Good lessons. I mostly play Snooker and and it’s an advantage when playing many players in Pool ( I need help against good Pool players). A big difference is ‘mindset’. In Snooker one comes up to the table every time thinking ‘what is the best shot?’ And not ‘how can I clear the table...

    Old timer/ history

Obit of one of my dad’s war buddies. I used to play pool with him and my dad about 30 years ago at the Legion. The third paragraph caught my eye…I had no idea of his earlier life. Makes one wonder about how much billiards history is out there.

Why only USA and Europe in the Mosconi Cup?

Also depends where events are held. In Taiwan? Hong Kong? Some events in the last couple years don’t have all been best Asians attending.

Why only USA and Europe in the Mosconi Cup?

Perhaps. However Americans, like all nationalities, like winners. Americans would often finish last. Most popular sports in the world by viewers Soccer Cricket Field Hockey Table Tennis Compare them in the USA to an interest in American football, baseball and basketball. Insane interest...

The Object Ball and Almost Nothing Else

This isn’t being dismissive of your approach. Whatever works best for you. In contrast, I rarely even think about it. I’m more machine like and get into a flow. Perhaps it’s from Snooker training. I’ve played for over 50 years and couldn’t tell you what ball I’m looking at.

I never use the diamonds. How many of you do?

Never even think about them. I just have a feel where to hit. It’s like passing a puck to a skating team mate or tossing a football to a running receiver . A split second instinct for the physics is there without any conscious calculation. Using diamonds are fine but I know what works ‘for...

    Cold weather and speed

Yes, it influences moisture. I live in a cool but very dry climate. My games room is often cool. I rarely turn the heat on as I prefer it cool. I play almost everyday winter or summer and have never noticed any difference in rails or cloth. Things here dessicate before rotting and paper...

    Ronnie wins World Grand Prix

Ronnie made one shot in the 6th frame that took me six attempts to replicate on my table…and that’s with me knowing it was possible and zero pressure. I would have given him 20% odds in the final. Glad to be wrong. At times 0’Sullivan is like one of those idiot savants that just gets on a...

    bar cue

I have an assortment of Dufferin cues. I get them at thrift stores here in Calgary. I nearly always use a Snooker cue so limited experience actually playing with Dufferin Pool cues. However, from that Limited experience I would say ‘no’. I have red, green and black leaf Snooker and Pool cues...

"Snooker is *torture* at all skill levels . . . pool is *fun* at all skill levels."

True. In Snooker a good part of focus is on the opponent. Just keep bringing the white back to bulk. Once or ten times. Like a prize fighter prodding for an opening. Don’t try to match pots with a sharpshooter and don’t try to out strategize a veteran.

    Shaft Dia. Preference

I use my Snooker cue for Snooker and Pool. 8.9 mm. It’s not better or worse but just used to playing with that size for 53 years. Can spin the cueball like a Tasmanian devil. If I had started with American Pool would be using a Pool cue. When I grab a cue at a friends house or a pool...

"Snooker is *torture* at all skill levels . . . pool is *fun* at all skill levels."

Huge difference in talent between 1980 and 2021. There weren’t a lot of ‘dedicated’ snooker players. Today there’s at least 128 Chinese who are playing and studying the game every day. Centuries are a difficult measure. Depends a lot on a player’s table strategy. Easier to make against a lower...

"Snooker is *torture* at all skill levels . . . pool is *fun* at all skill levels."

Can be torture. Back in my mid 20’s I once calculated that I was around the 300th top Snooker player in the world. Stay in the UK and practice 4 hours a day or return to Canada and continue as a geologist? Glad I returned and have other interests in life. With lots of dedicated practice I...

It's that time of year ...

I’m obviously a Neanderthal with no sense of style. I’d cover one of those with a three-quarter inch sheet of plywood and use it as a work bench. Then again might be able to list it locally in the classified ads for $500…then let it go for $150 with the accessories.

Top 10 Reasons for Missing … and How to Prevent It

Guilty! I’ll miss by the amount I adjusted when down….muttering ‘I knew better’. Related…something I was taught in Snooker literally a half century ago. It’s similar when making a hand bridge to shoot over an awkward ball, etc. If the hand doesn’t feel right don’t try to adjust fingers, wrist...
