The facings weren’t done correctly, or they have compressed and become misshapened over time. A good table mechanic could make those pockets play correctly. Preferably while installing new cloth.
The early ones weren’t set up to push, with a dumbass behind the wheel, they would swap ends pretty quick. Toyota made the same mistake, decades later, with the MR2. Both manufacturers came with a second gen that wasn’t nearly as tail happy .
I think there is some validity to your hypothesis, but you are missing something. The top guys you are referring to, will adjust. Do you think they won’t figure out how to win?
