I generally agree, but to play devil's advocate to you, there are cues that have a distinctive hit. That has to count for something. A good hitting cue is worth it's weight in gold. So I don't think a cue's hit is an overrated value, I think a person's(seller's) DESCRIPTION of a cue's hit is...

It's all a matter of feel, and in that respect tip and ferrule are the most important part of the hit. I like playing with different feels for different cues. Most ferrules have a cap, but if you play without one(cap) like macguy you will feel the hit the strongest....it's a very "raw" hit, ie...

Personally, I think carrying around a 1piece is the stupidest thing in gaming. I don't think there is any proof that 1pieces are functionally "better". But they are pragmatically worse. And if someone is really hard up for "the hit" of a 1piece they can have a house cue made with a woodjoint...

A common use for marking a ferrule is that some players prefer their cues' shaft to be facing a particular direction. Marking the ferrule helps to show which side is up. The preference is to have the grain lines facing sideways.
