    Statistics and pool

If you use Bayes theorem as a foundation for modeling probability, you could take into account prior probabilities and likelihoods. This would allow you to keep track of if you are shooting hot or cold and adjust the expected probability accordingly.

Maryland - DC Area - Poolhalls?

About 4 years ago I was at University of Maryland in College park, and remember heading a few miles down Rt. 1 and seeing a laundromat with several bar boxes that seemed to be getting good use. I never checked it out as the clientele seemed questionable from the outside. Has anyone ever been...

Where to see Cory Duel break that changed the rules?

Corey was playing supernaturally around the late 90s-early 2000s. He seemed so good that he was almost bored with the game, and took to playing more golf. Although he is a brilliant player he was on another planet then.

    Any more pool "secrets"?

While this thread has taken a humorous turn, there is still a lesson to be learned. There are no pool secrets. To someone learning pool this may seem counter-intuitive since they feel that their game will jump once they pick up on some new stroke or aiming "secret". In reality those secrets...

Why is there no organization or association running pool as a sport?

Basically the attempts in the past have either screwed the players, had the players screw themselves, were financial failures or outright heists by conmen. The end result is what you see.

    Kick bottom

When struck with draw, after hitting the cushion the cueball stops spinning and slides towards object ball, effectively acting as though you struck a stop shot on the object ball. It is possible to put enough draw on the ball so that after striking the object ball the cueball will continue...

    DCC 2011 Trip Report

Thanks for the report, it is quite interesting to see Shannon Murphy doing well, I remember seeing him play in Ohio years back and gambling with members of his entourage. His game must have really picked up for him to be able to do so much damage.

The story of how you found your cue...

Sappy story: Right when I got into pool early in college, I had my eyes on the cheapest Joss available. Soon after I had to undergo open-heart surgery. When I got home from the hospital my brother had got me an expensive high-end Joss cue that has been my main player since then. He gave me...

What kind of players give you a hard time?

Anyone that I figure has me beat before I take the first shot. If I think someone is so much better than me that I don't stand a chance, I end up playing like crap. Almost like well, this is what is going to happen so let it happen quickly. Interestingly I've noticed the reverse effect as...

No, my poolroom was nothing like that. It had yoga mats and a salad bar.

How straight or consistent is your stroke if...

If you want to straighten your stroke you have the right idea. If you get to the point at which you are pulling long draw or follow shots comfortably then you are hitting the ball accurately. Another question is, how hard are you hitting the ball? If you are able to get really nice draw with...

    Reyes to retire?

He did indeed have Lasik but that doesn't fix everything. Lasik corrects the focus of your eyes, similarly to glasses. However, with age, your contrast sensitivity also decreases steadily. Contrast sensitivity is roughly how bright the wold appears to you, and its decline is why older drivers...

    Any ideas?

Check if your college has a Billiards Club. If not, it is usually quite simple to start a club, and you can request funding from the student board. All you would need formally is to have some regular meetings, and you can probably request reduced rates for club members.

    Practicing 1-Pocket

I like to do the "L" drill, even if not with a full set of balls, to warm up quickly. The drill requires honing your touch and speed control.

    joss shaft

I'm not sure, but I believe something is different with a Joss ferrule, possibly some hollow space at the end. In any case, it has a stiff nice hit. I tried a predator shaft on my joss and went back to the stock one.
