Yeah, the 2 side contacts at the front is all that you need. If you are hitting the straight ahead front contact it can cause problems. A bit of sanding can take care of that with just about any rack though.

In 8 ball there is a solid reason to put in one of your opponents balls. What if he has one of his balls hanging in a pocket that blocks some of your shots? Then you have a chance to make your shot and put his ball in at the same time to clear the pocket for some of your object balls for later...

I have to say that any cue ball can be used to see exactly where you are hitting the cue ball versus where you think you are hitting the cue ball. Just line up the cue ball so that the maker's mark is dead center, then try to hit 1/2 tip outside of that mark. Look at where the chalk mark is...
