    My Fargorate progression

I started out with Byrne's Standard Guide to Pool and Billiards, and as opposed to a lot of other players, I did not ignore the second half of the book that refers to three cushion. That half of the book is your basic blueprint for higher level safety play. I actually used to play a little three...

    Fingering the one ball

Bob.. You seem to be assuming the CB is striking the CB midpoint to midpoint, sliding across the cloth. If the CB is in the air when it strikes the 1 ball, and the contact point has oil on it, the CB will tend to climb up over the 1 ball, leading to a higher chance of driving the CB off the...

    (Un)Popular Opinion on Fargo Rate

Good point, Bob. One point I will add is that chess survives in an environment where the best players have MUCH higher advantage in a single game, as compared to pool. And it does so by separating out "divisions" of specific rating ranges in tournaments. Which is what we are seeing the early...

    Fingering the one ball

I asked this of an old school player in Seattle area, Mike Zimmerman, because I had seen him tell a player (might have been John Horsfall?) to not touch the 1 ball when racking for his opponent.. I asked Mike why this was a problem? He told me that some players will rub their fingers through...

My first lesson with a certified instructor, Dragon Billiards

Extreme drive is one of those genetic gifts, especially when paired with an outsized athletic talent. People sometimes don't realize that. An extreme will to win is not something you just "decide" to have. It's something you are born with, and is therefore, almost certainly genetic in nature...

My first lesson with a certified instructor, Dragon Billiards

If you don't know which eye is dominant (if any), then it is difficult to know where your head should be over the cue, to give a consistent shot picture. And for those with "cross dominance", then stance might have to change slightly to compensate for this. Unfortunately, too many amateurs...

    Non-Gambling Pool Players

Hey Greg.. You ever play at the Hawaiin/Samoan joint in Puyallup I think, the "Cue and Cushion"? Owned by Ed Tarape... I was once in there playing a dude $5 8 ball, and the guy would absolutely not quit until he won a game... I ended up winning $100 before he finally got a game and quit. He...

    Non-Gambling Pool Players

In the modern economy... Cell phones and cars are kinda somewhat mandatory. And living in the shi55y economy we are right now.. Netflix is prolly about the cheapest form of entertainment, dollar for dollar. Unless we feel that workers should basically just go to work, slave away, and then come...

    Non-Gambling Pool Players

It might have something to all the money flowing up to billionaires at the top of our economy, and not into workers pockets, to offset inflation. I think you'd find younger people would gamble just fine if they had much spare money for things outside of rent and groceries.

    Fargo Match.... 679 vs 851

We do? I watched some of her recent play, and the one thing that stood out is that she is hitting certain shots exactly like Joshua Filler does, It is obvious that he has been working with her. She went from being a middle of the road female player, to going deep in the DCC 9 ball, and winning a...

For the guys who play with glasses

My issue is I have pretty severe astigmatism. I cannot get Lasik, and when I get old enough for lense replacement, the odds are I won't get a positive outcome on both far and close distance vision..

    Fargo Match.... 679 vs 851

Well... Let me say this about Mike Sigel, given I have personal experience of having the opportunity to go in with a local shortstop Josh Degler in Florida against Mike in a gambling match. (Unfortunately, I didn't have the stones, and thought Mike had the advantage...) This was something like...

Casino daily take during pool tourn.....??

Well... Vegas thrives on large groups of people making a continuous series of bad financial decisions. And for whatever reason, most of the I.T. Engineers I know, don't gamble. Those of us who tend to be good at our jobs tend to approach both work and personal lives in a rational, reasoned way.

SJM at the 2025 Derby City Classic

I am considering going to Rome to get some coaching from Alex Lely. He has a deal of 5 hours a day at a reasonable price, which includes accommodations and food.

For the guys who play with glasses

Personally, I went with a billiards glasses maker that had serviced multiple pros. I tried shooting with a pair of larger sized lenses I had on a pair of my normal glasses, and when I changed to a competently made set of billiards glasses, I saw clearly that a custom pair gave a much clearer...

what causes so many shots to hang

And I am betting you're wrong. There is absolutely no way to mistake the effect of the downangle being incorrect, ifyou know what you're looking for. It was a design flaw in the Red Labels, that got corrected in the Blue Labels. Plenty of Red Labels have actually been retroactively repaired. I...

what causes so many shots to hang

See my post about the Red Labels. There was a design flaw that resulted in bad rail downangles. It has since been fixed in all the Blue Labels.. But unfortunately, there are still a lot of Red Labels out there in pool halls.

I got a 4 1/8" inch Blue Label Diamond. I absolutely love it

what causes so many shots to hang

The reason for this is that you likely have unrepaired Red Labels with the rails slightly tilted down from the "proper" down angle.. This causes the rail edge to "lift up" the balls as they hit the rail and bounce off. This effect is magnified when humidity levels rise. This also has the affect...
