tiger ONYX tip vs other tiger tips

Onyx Tip I have used Sniper tips for the past 4 years, or so. And I will say it is a fabulous tip--soft feel, grips amazingly well, yet the tip is firm and holds its shape. So then I tried an Onyx. Well, the first time I used it, I was surprised by the hit. Much harder than a Sniper. Yet it...

    Lee Brett's DVD Now Shipping

I received my DVD's very quickly. And I must say, this is a quality instruction set. Lee's assertion that all thinking must be done "outside the box" (a step or two away from the table) is something we should all remind ourselves constantly. My mentor, George Mikula, always reminded me to do my...

    Linen wraps

Elephant ear I replaced the linen wrap on my SW cue with an elephant ear wrap. It is simply awesome!

    Smokey Mountain Shootout 2012

I'm assuming this will be held the last week of April this year. Does anyone know the official dates? For those who've never attended, this is one of the nicest tournaments I've been to. Great players, nice relaxed environment, terrific competition and a fine cause. It's my favorite tournament...

    Shaft Freeze

I can attest to the benefits of Shaft Freeze. I have it on two of my cues and I'm convinced it's the best shaft treatment out there. I have seen no discoloration whatsoever. What I really like, is it makes a new shaft feel like one that has been "cured" by years of use. It has that patina and...

    Wrap Choice

I have a Southwest that I've had for 15 years. It needed a replacement wrap. I considered sending it back to Laurie, but kept hearing about elephant ear. So I went to Mike Gulyassy and talked to him about it. He showed me some samples of elephant ear stock and he had a color that matched my...

Stick raising at end of backswing

I have seen a number of excellent players that elevate the cue slightly at the end of the backswing. One great player who does this is Jim Rempe. So you are in good company. If you are shooting well, don't worry about it.

Anyone Ever Make It In 3 Years?

Ginky was the fastest from neophyte to world class I've ever seen. He worked with Paul Snyder and George Mikula and within a year or two was playing anyone who came through. Someone mentioned Jenette Lee. She was definitely playing at 16 (not 18), and she did climb fast, though not as fast as...

    best damn tip ever

I've played with Triangles for many years. There is no doubt it's a great tip. But it's not my favorite tip. The Tiger Onyx is awesome. It's very firm, yet not hard. Holds its shape absolutely and chalks nicely. The best thing about it is the feel of impact. It hits with a firm, solid thud...

    Johnny Irish Stories Please!

Johnny Ervolino used to refer to Johnny Irish a lot. Wish I could remember some of his stories. But one thing is certain, Ervolino had the world of respect for Johnny Irish, as did everyone else I ever talked to. Never met the man, nor saw him play. Wish I had.

    New Mezz, very slippery butt.

I also find pressed linen feels very slick. Wax paper helps. I've even tried wax over the whole wrap. Eventually, over time, it gets less slick, but it's still somewhat slippery. I finally solved the problem on my Southwest, though. I had Mike Gulyassy put an elephant ear wrap on it. OMG, it...

    Gulyassy SPTX Shaft Review...

I have the same shaft on a cue Mike made for me last year. I also do not like LD shafts, for the same reasons. In fact, I normally don't even like extended pro taper shafts. I prefer stiffer parabolic taper shafts. But Mike's shaft is different. I really don't understand why, but his Strickland...

What makes a good pool player have an out of stroke day?

I know for myself, if I carry some mental turmoil (work, bills, women, whatever) into my pool playing, I tend to rush the shot. I'm impatient and won't sight the ball properly as I get into my stance. When that happens, I find myself in stance without having aimed, or I'll be stroking and not...

Smoking could be part of the problem too...

Well said, Bill. You hit upon the exact problem. People don't have as much discretionary cash as we did 40 years ago. Trickle down, or in GHWB's words, "Voodoo Economics," has devastated middle class economic security, funneling money up, such that damn little trickles down. And there will be...

    Age and Deflection

Mike, I really feel like for an experienced player like yourself, there is very little difference in the ultimate performance of a LD shaft and a regular solid shaft. I definitely prefer the hit and feel of a natural shaft to a LD shaft. As you may recall, I sold you the one LD shaft I liked...

    What is the best tip?

I have played almost exclusively with Sniper tips for the past 3 years. I think it's a great tip. Nothing better until I tried the Onxy. The Onyx has a firmer feel and better hit. It's worth the slight amount more money than the Sniper. Hell, I only paid $20 for the Onyx. How much less could a...

    What is the best tip?

Best tip for the money is Triangle. Best tip regardless of cost, Onyx. I've been using one for a month now and it just gets better and better. Superb tip. I can find nothing wrong with it. Feel is awesome. Has a really nice sound (thud, not click) and solid, solid hit. Firm but not hard. Holds...

    Pros and shafts

When the IPT got rolling, someone compiled a list of players and the equipment they used. It should be available in a search.

    stroke question

There are two reasons I advised a hard stroke. One, too soft a stroke and most or all of the side spin may dissipate before it gets to the top rail. The other is, a hard stroke reveals flaws that might be hidden by a soft (shorter) stroke.
