2018 US International Open - Observations

Jay: IIRC, in the early days of the U.S. Open when it first got televised, they had all the players fill out bio forms with their favorite player in the field, influence, major titles, age, birth place, etc. and the commentators would refer to those during matches (maybe it was a PBT...

    Cue Rattle

Had something similar with a custom cue once...turned out to be a small bead of epoxy in the joint insert that was too big to fall out. The maker got it out for me, no problemo. Could be something similar, or in somewhere else, maybe inside the butt, past the weight bolt or screw holding on...

    An attack of nostalgia

Great thread! My love affair started while watching my father play straight pool at a friend's house in their basement/bar/den on a 12 foot Brunswick. I was about 7, my brother and I would "serve" the drinks (Harvey Wallbangers) as they were prepared at the bar to the adults playing poker. Of...

When you're late with your wife's anniversary gift and you get her an Anniversary.

Beat me to it...reminded me of the Simpsons episode where Homer buys Marge a bowling ball...with "Homer" emblazoned on it. Awesome table! Report back on how many hours in comparison each of you puts on it after a couple of months...:)

    Death of the road runner

There are a few road runners around that still fly under the radar, mainly because the average population in the average room is too young to know who they are, even if they carded them. A lot of them do their best on the rail, making games and sweating them. Then finishing the evening with a...

    Is this case worth saving

I don't see anything wrong with it, unless it's got something scratching the cue...but a snug fit JB interior would definitely be a nice upgrade. The exterior looks just fine to me, a nice classic case.

    Center CB

I agree with your post, but I've rarely run into a table that rolls or banks that bad that you can't do this drill--at least side to side if not end to end. If someone is playing on a table that rolls off or banks that bad, then they need to move to another table--or another pool room. I can...

Is Nick Varner playing these days?

There was a video of him playing Landon at his university student union a couple of years ago at a challenge/exhibition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKm1Y1XxEmQ ...Nick appeared to have a pretty significant tremor in his stroke and Landon handled him pretty easily. Nick was my favorite...

    Center CB

I absolutely agree...almost ALL of my misses are due failure to hit the CB where I needed or meant to. The drill of stroking the CB down table, and having it hit your tip on the return is invaluable to verifying Center CB and verifying your stroke. I do it every day and have for many years...

    Old McDermott box case

Yeah, mine too...but with an $1100 Joss in it. :( Mine had a bed of roses hand painted on one side (done by a friend)...stolen out of the trunk of my car when it broke down near Leesville, Louisiana in 1991...still dream about it.

    The GOAT's cue??

I read somewhere that he and his cohorts used to (maybe still do) cut "seasoned" elk masters off house cues with a pocket knife surreptitiously and reinstall them on his cues. Someone else posted on here once upon a time that they picked up his Judd at a DCC when he took a break and poked a few...

CJ Wiley VS Efren Reyes - June 19, 2018

I frankly think CJ played way better than I expected him to. He hung within a game of Efren Freakin' Reyes for nearly the entire set, right up until the end when Efren pulled away. And I don't believe Efren was laying down on him, either. Yes, he has some rust and not a lot of AAA players...

    Book...The Color of Money

I read somewhere that Gleason was expecting to get invited to reprise his role in TCOM, and should have, if the book were followed. I think there was a combination of focusing on the younger characters to some extent, to draw in the big demographic...that, plus a lot of pool players (Sigel, et...

That's not a break and run!!!

I'm pretty sure Earl's 10 (really 11) pack in the Million Dollar Challenge had several 9 on the snaps and shortcuts...almost as many as 9 ball run outs?? Somebody on here might know/chime in?

Raw potential for Mosconi-Cup-Style team for countries/continents

And no single European country tops the US, either, which was a point made some time ago.

    SVB's Mosconi Facebook post

Shane v. Economopoulos, MC '14, Nick wins 5-2 to cement the Cup that year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpCplV1ylEc Meanwhile, later that year (I think like three weeks later) Shane accepts Nick's invite to play him a race to 50 10 Ball match in Athens...

    Cases: Whitten vs. JB

I have a 2X4 rugged for storage, and this 3X6 Mason. Awesome cases, never seen a bad one, built like a tank. The Mason took 8 weeks from concept/first email order to delivery. Great service, great case!

    Cork Wrap..God/bad experience?

I had a McDermott D23 years ago that had a black cork wrap...it was very nice, felt good once I got used to the texture/feel, and held up just fine...but it did get a ding in it from a fumble at the table that cut into the cork and bugged me for the rest of the time I owned it. The hole didn't...
