    Spalted Tamarind question

Does/should un-stabilized spalted tamarind need to be cored for strength? Looking to use this for both the forearm and the handle. Pretty light - so I thought I'd ask the pros. Thanks! Ken

    Forearm points install question

Hobbyist here – with another question, this time regarding installing points on a forearm. Have researched and feel reasonably comfortable with the layered veneers, joining them at a 45 for the inset and shaping the solid block for the point. Now comes cutting the tapered V-grooves to accept...

    Coring question

Question for those that core. Exploring the potential of setting up to core. If the goal is to core a .625 hole – with a .625 gun drill - can this be done with just the .625 gun drill? Or will it require step drilling with multiple drills? Some much to learn.....so little time. Thanks! Ken

Follow-on query Please allow a follow-on question, for a bit of personal edification. How does one (who knows what they are doing) remove the original pin?

    Coring query

Thanks Great information already! Thanks! I overlooked an obvious permutation to my question. I've been focused on heavier woods, naturally needing a lighter core. Never occurred to me that the opposite existed as well. So much to learn, so little time! Thanks again! Ken

    Coring query

For those of you who core - couple of questions: What is your material of choice for the core itself? What type of adhesive do you prefer? Still learning what question to ask! Thanks! Ken

    In Question of Wood Finish

Oil finish Many gunstocks use a product known as Tru-oil - which is a blend of linseed and natural oils. Dries pretty fast and remains clear. Waterproof as well. Have used it on pens for years when I wanted a hard, gloss finish. Fairly easy to locate - just google it. Hope this helps.

    Shaft insert replacement?

That's the default approach - thought I'd inquire if the veterans knew of a "better way." Thanks! Ken

    Shaft insert replacement?

Was brought a shaft whose insert now "spins" when threaded onto the butt. Seems as though the insert has lost its secured connection. Do not know if insert is/was threaded or not. Is there a recommended method of removing a problem insert? Still learning as the challenges continue. Thanks - Ken

    5/16 x 14 Tap Drill query

New kid on the block here with what is probably a simple question regarding joint pin installation. Task ahead is to install a 5/16 x 14 self-centering pin. Understand and can achieve the boring successfully, but not having much luck in identifying the appropriate tap drill for the 5/16 x 14...
