    Big Props to Barry!!

Barry made a great decision. Can't wait to get there (this will be my 16th year). IF one of the women wins it, I would bet it will be reported on every newscast and in every newspaper in the country. That would be a tremendous boon to the industry.

    Marketing Minds want to know.....

I, unfortunately, agree with your post. And yet, pool and billiards were HUGE before World War II. Matches appeared as the top headlines on the sports pages and lots of people followed the game at the professional level because they played the game seriously themselves. After the war, men...

    Your favourite Earl Strickland quotes

Classic Earl: "I should've been a butcher." - After a difficult out during a televised match from the early 90s. "Safeties are for chickens." - Playing David Smith Saturday morning at the 1995 US Open. "Break like a man!" - After Reyes slow-broke at the 1995 US Open during an 11-2 shellacking...

Second Attempt A little better..... 15 4 10 20 4 43 0 27 15 4 Total: 142 At least I got into the second rack 3 times. I got straight in on the break ball on the two 15s. The 43 felt pretty good. Seemed like I would never miss. But I ended up with no shot after the fourth break shot.

Post your 10 consecutive practice run scores...

First Attempt Hi all. Just decided to start playing straight pool again and noticed this post when visiting 14.1 Pool for some pointers. So, I decided to give this a try. I've been playing nothing but 9-ball for the past 10 years, so I'm really rusty at straight pool. I'm definitely hitting...

    Small US Open Field

Was just looking at the US Open website and noticed that there are only 109 players entered as of 9/29 -- and this figure includes those past champions who will not actually be playing (Sigel, etc.). Ugh! I wonder if this list is really up to date. I hope not...

    Earl Strickland in his prime

The Mighty Earl That match was my first as well and, just like you, I became an Earl fan instantly. Been to 14 US Opens since then and have seen Earl play many times (including his wins in 1997 and 2000). I have two stories -- one positive, the other negative -- and both involve Efren Reyes...

Shane's stock at Action Challenge II?

Anything is possible, but I highly doubt it. Earl hasn't done much of anything in the last 5 years. I think a big part of the reason he quits so many matches these days is he doesn't want to lose to a "lesser" player (and in his mind, everyone is a lesser player). If he quits, he doesn't...

Higher percentage today of 100 run players?

Fast Cloth Makes a Big Difference I agree that the equipment is better today (meaning: makes straight pool easier) for all of the reasons already given, plus one more: Simonis cloth. Simonis (or any other fast cloth) allows the balls to be spread with a much softer stroke. On slow cloth...

    Who made ESPN Stupid?

Thank you for doing so Jay! This is one of my favorite tournaments in my video collection. Earl just barely sneaks past Wiley and then Archer. He was funny, joking with the audience several times. And he makes a beautiful full-table jump shot, drawing back two rails for position. In the...
