Matching a new shaft to a finished cue.

One way to deal with your problem is try makin' an insert concentric with the cues joint pin , depends on what pin type is there... cut it between centers then put the insert in the shaft. That would insure that even the if the pin is not straight, the shaft and butt would be inline when joined...

    overseas cuemakers

I'm not familiar with ivory laws but does the law mean that it is illegal to export and import products with ivory like cues in the US? Then if so, no US made cue with ivory is allowed to leave the US... kinda limiting IMO... Legal ivory can be bought in antique shops I believe they are...

    Flaws in joint?

IMO, from the description, the joint was threaded all the way through. Facing specially when it hits the threaded portion culd bring out such. If it doesnt affect the hit then let it be, otherwise you could fill the gap with stained epoxy to match the joint color then face off again. On the...

Custom Cue Build Off For Charity

I believe it would be better off that a cuemaker would donate a cue of his choice to charity instead, less the $25 entry fee... send it to a common depot, say Mike... and sales could be done here on Az with the proceeds goin to charity.

    Where to buy carbide bushings

Bob. I believe we are speaking of the same method (my previous post) except that I use a sharp blade to scrape off (rather than sandpaper) but very light strokes... The carbide or metal set I mainly use for getting the shaft and joint to size... the final facing is determined when the shaft and...

    Where to buy carbide bushings

I dunno exactly what Bob means but my own procedure of what I could call hand facing is after checking the shaft where it's off at the butt, lightly scrape that area with a blade then join again and check... with the butt chucked on the lathe and hand turning it and see how off the tip end of...

    Can anyone explain...

yes I read the first post, and just like what I said, not "only" will the "inlays" be amiss... the points too if what was claimed in that post that the cue was turned down to straighten it out...

    Can anyone explain...

If that cue was turned down to straighten it out, not only the inlays will be amiss if it wasn't cut deep enuf... the points would be uneven too (assuming they are spliced points...)

    Shaping tips on a lathe??

I use a rotary tool with a sanding drum to shape the tip... works great for me. I just hold it to the tip while spinning on the lathe and move it along the tip to have my desired shape. Just takes a minute :D

Thin Cues / Long Shaft Taper

Not aware if there is such a standard but my joint specs are between 0.850-0.845... building one now for a guy with a. 0.825 at the joint and 1.230 at the butt, not that's a thin cue for me :D Cuetec has a thinner joint I believe somwhere around 0.785 or so but the taper gets gets aggressive...

    Growth rings in shaft wood

I agree, shafts with more growth rings tend be to be darker... well that's what I have. It appears to be a series of layered butterfly points from the joint end goin to a few inches below the tip... the one that's from end to end is for my cue... :D
